The Toronto Blue Jays added depth on Saturday, acquiring infielder Cliff Pennington from the Arizona Diamondbacks for infielder Dawel Lugo and cash considerations.

Robert Murray of Baseball Essential reported that the deal was close. Meanwhile, Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish reported that Pennington was the main piece in the deal. Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reported that the Blue Jays got cash from the Diamondbacks.

Before the trade deadline, the Washington Nationals and Pittsburgh Pirates looked at Pennington, which means the Blue Jays were practically his last hope to make a switch of teams because the National League gave up on the infielder. Pennington will be a free agent after this season is over, but has a good chance to contend for a World Series if the Blue Jays continue their hot streak.

The veteran signed a one-year, $3.28 million dollar deal with Arizona in the offseason. The Blue Jays demanded cash to help pay for his contract, of course, the Diamondbacks agreed.

The switch-hitter was drafted in the first round (21st pick) in the 2005 MLB Draft by the Oakland Athletics after living his entire life in the state of Texas. He has played for the Athletics and Diamondbacks during his eight-year Major League career.

Pennington is batting .237/.314/.281 with one home run and 10 RBI over 72 games this season. He has a career .248 batting average with 28 homers and 200 RBI during his 2,329 career at-bats.

Lugo, who was sent to the Diamondbacks, was the 12th-best prospect for the Blue Jays, according to MLB.com. Now, he is the 17th-best prospect in the Diamondbacks organization, per MLB.com.

The 20-year-old is a native of the Dominican Republic and mainly plays shortstop. However, Lugo has the ability to play multiple infield positions.

Through four Minor League seasons, Lugo has hit .259/.288/.355 with 17 home runs and 161 RBI. He has played in 329 games in his career.

Lugo's best season came in 2012 with both the Blue Jays Rookie ball team and Low Single-A. He hit .284 with seven home runs and 44 RBI over 67 games with both teams.

The Diamondbacks announced that they have also selected the contract of utility man Jamie Romak, as MLB Trade Rumors noted a few hours after the deal.

Romak hit .289/.373/.554 with 22 home runs for Triple-A Reno after the Diamondbacks signed him last offseason. He has spend most his career in the Double-A and Triple-A levels.

The fourth round draft pick by the Atlanta Braves in the 2003 MLB Draft will become a free agent in 2021, and his rookie status is still intact through 2015.

The 29-year-old played 15 games for the Los Angeles Dodgers at the Major League level in 2014, when he was 28. Romak posted an awful line of .048/.130/.095, which is 1-for-21. He drew two walks and hit a double, but struck out eight times. The double that he hit drove in three runs; his only RBI's at the Major League level.

He has a career .255 batting average in the Minors with the St. Louis Cardinals, Pirates, Dodgers, Braves and the Diamondbacks.
