The Washington Nationals have agreed to a one-year, $3 million deal with infielder Stephen Drew, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports. Heyman mentions that Drew can earn an extra $1.25 million in incentives.

With the veteran signing, the Nationals have a bit more depth in their infield. Currently, Anthony Rendon is slated to start at third base, Danny Espinosa at shortstop, Daniel Murphy at third base and Ryan Zimmerman at first base. By signing Drew, Washington will put the 32-year-old as the backup shortstop and drop Trea Turner to the Triple-A Syracuse Chiefs. Wilmer Difo, a top prospect along with Turner, will also start the season in the minors. Turner was impressive last season, but needs more time to prosper as an infielder.

Should Rendon, Espinosa or Murphy get injured, Washington can toss in Drew without any problem. And if Zimmerman would get hurt, Murphy could play first base and Drew could play second. The addition gives the Nationals so much more in the field and at the plate.

Drew is coming off a rough 2015 season after primarily spending his entire 10-year career as a shortstop. He hit .201/.217/.381 with 17 home runs, the fifth-most on the team, and 44 RBI, but struck out 71 times across 131 games while posting a .652 on-base-plus-slugging percentage.

During that season with the New York Yankees, Drew only managed to play three of the last 24 games for the team due to an inner ear concussion, which was acquired by a ground ball to the face in early September. He has a previous concussion issue in 2013.

In the 2004 MLB Draft, Drew was picked 15th overall by the Arizona Diamondbacks. As a matter of fact, Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo was the scouting director for Arizona at the time of the draft pick, so Rizzo is quite familiar with the infielder.

With the Diamondbacks (2006-2012), Oakland Athletics (2012), Boston Red Sox (2013-2014) and the Yankees (2014-2015), Drew has hit .251 with 114 home runs and 486 RBI over 1,152 games played during his career.

Scott Boras, an agent, now has nine players on the 40-man roster of Washington. Drew is the second client of Boras to sign with the Nationals after Oliver Perez, a right-handed reliever, signed a two-year deal earlier this winter.

The Nationals need to clear two players from their 40-man roster as a result of the signing of Drew and Murphy.
