Jake Odorizzi RHP

Jake Odorizzi has been struggling this season according to his Baseball Savant page as he is in the 15th percentile in barrel percentage, 19th percentile in xSLG, 22nd percentile in whiff percentage, and 24th percentile in chase rate. His 10.0 barrel percentage is the highest for a full 162-game season in his career.

Odorizzi has a five-pitch arsenal (fastball, splitter, slider, cutter, curveball) and his slider has been the best as it has a .211 batting average and a .579 slugging percentage. He faced the Mariners twice this season and is 2-0 in 11 innings and allowed four runs on nine hits with five walks and 11 strikeouts.

4:00 PM22 days ago

Logan Gilbert RHP

Logan Gilbert is considered to be the fourth-ranked prospect in the Seattle organization and is all over the place according to his Baseball Savant page. He is in the 89th percentile in walk percentage, 67th percentile in strikeout percentage, 12th percentile in average exit velocity, and 11th percentile in hard-hit percentage.

He throws four different pitches (fastball, slider, changeup, curveball) and his changeup has been hit most as it has a .389 batting average and a .778 slugging percentage. He faced the Astros once and lost by going 4.2 innings and allowed nine runs on eight hits with a walk and five strikeouts.

Houston’s Offense is Soaring

The Houston Astros rank as the best offensive team in the entire MLB as they have a .779 OPS this season. Scoring runs seem to not be a concern for Houston as they are averaging 5.34 runs per game up to this point.

A big reason is the ability to hit on the road as in 65 road games for the Astros, the team has a slash line of .272/.338/.444 while averaging 5.43 runs per game. Shortstop Carlos Correa has been doing well during his last year under contract as he has an .847 OPS with 20 home runs and 69 RBI this season. If the Astros can continue to hit as well as they have been, they’ll be extremely difficult to beat.

3:50 PM22 days ago

Mariners Need to Hit Better

The Seattle Mariners are not a good offensive team this season as their .681 OPS is good for 27th in MLB. Their .293 OBP as a team this year is only ahead of the Texas Rangers this season.

Looking at their offense during the last 15 days (13 games) they are an average offense as they are scoring 4.23 runs per game in that stretch. First baseman Ty France is leading the Seattle lineup as he has an .816 OPS with 16 home runs and 60 RBI. If the young Mariners can hit better, they will be able to play meaningful games in September.

Jake Odorizzi RHP

Odorizzi is coming off back to back solid starts, limiting his opposition to 3 runs in 10.2 innings of work. Odorizzi also started the August 21 matchup between these two teams as he fared much better than Gilbert, allowing 1 run on 4 hits in 5.2 innings. Seattle’s offense has been inconsistent all season as the Mariners rank 8 percent below league average in wRC+. In 93 plate appearances against current Mariners hitters, Odorizzi sports a respectable .207 batting average against. Houston’s offense sits atop the league in wRC+ this season, ranking 17 percent above league average. With Houston owning the edge in starting pitching and offense, back the Astros to take Wednesday afternoon’s rubber match.
3:00 PM22 days ago

Logan Gilbert RHP

Logan Gilbert (5-5, 5.44 ERA, 3.92 xFIP) attempts to get right as Seattle hosts Jake Odorizzi (6-6, 4.46 ERA, 4.73 xFIP) and the Houston Astros Wednesday afternoon for their early-week series finale. Given Houston’s odds as slight road favorites, the Astros are the recommended side to take. Odorizzi has the ability to limit Seattle’s offense while being aided by ample run support. Gilbert enters Wednesday afternoon off 3 straight underwhelming performances, allowing a combined 19 runs in 12.2 innings. Until Gilbert puts together a formidable start, he is a rookie starter worth fading.
