Cole got off to a quality start with six, three-run, five-hit innings with three walks and six strikeouts. While Eovaldi had one of his worst starts of the entire season, with seven runs allowed on seven hitless hits in 2 2/3 innings.

Cole was 2-2 with a 4.91 ERA in four starts against the Red Sox this season. Eovaldi is 2-2 with a 3.71 ERA in six starts against his former team this season.

Postseason Background

The classic 1978 playoff game played at Fenway Park is one of the most memorable playoff games in Major League baseball. Bucky Dent's three-run home run led the Yankees to victory, but that game was played for the AL East title before the start of the wild card era. The Yankees ultimately won the World Series that year.

Many years later they met again in the American League Championship Series in 2003 and 2004.
In 2003, the New York Yankees won epic Boone's starting home run in Game 7 to reach the World Series.
A year later, the Boston Red Sox made history by becoming the only team to overcome a 3-0 deficit in the playoff series when they defeated the Yankees en route to their first World Series championship in 86 years. A memorable series.

This is the first postseason meeting between the Red Sox and the Yankees since 2018, when Boston won the American League Division Series 3-1 en route to its fourth World Series title since 2004.

First time facing each other in Wildcard game

Baseball's greatest rivalry enters new territory tonight when the Boston Red Sox host the New York Yankees at Fenway Park for the first time in a single American League wild card game.

Despite finishing with the same record, Boston will host the wild card game as a result of winning the regular season series 10-9. The Yankees have won nine of the last 12 games between the teams after the Red Sox won the first seven meetings.

Boston has never played in the wild card format of a game, while this is New York's fourth appearance. The Yankees are 2-1 in wild card games, falling to Houston 3-0 in 2015, but beating Minnesota 8-4 in 2017 and Oakland 7-2 in 2018.

Sweet Caroline

This beautiful tradition was born in the 1997 season, the same year that the Wally The Green Monster mascot emerged. It is said that it was Amy Tobey, the Boston Red Sox employee in charge of putting the music, who decided to put this Neil Diamond song, this because a person very close to her had just had a baby who they named of Caroline and thought that when the Red Sox were winning, between the seventh and ninth innings, it would be a good time to put the song in the stadium.

For the 2002 season, Dr. Charles Steinberg became the team's vice president of public activations and decided that the song would be an integral part of the experience within Fenway Park. Steinberg saw that he had the characteristics to transform the atmosphere of the game, regardless of the score, and that touching it in the eighth inning would be the best moment, just as the team is about to hit. The song was of immediate impact and since then it became a beautiful custom at every Boston Red Sox game at the legendary Fenway Park, one of the most exciting and anticipated moments that has survived to this day.

The Green Monster

The Boston Red Sox were founded in 1901 and for nine years, they were home to the Huntington Avenue Grounds. However, in 1910 team owner John I. Taylor decided to buy a piece of land in the Fenway neighborhood to build a new baseball park.

However, Taylor did not want people without tickets to be able to see the games for free and right in the left sector of the stadium there were some buildings where you could watch the game without paying. It was then that the decision was made to build a wooden wall almost 8 meters high to obstruct the view towards the field of play.

In front of 'The Wall', as it was known at the time by fans, additional seats were placed when the stadium was full.

23 years passed and a fire that started in Fenway Park almost completely consumed the ball park. In the reconstruction work, the wall was given the characteristics that we know to this day, thus the 'Green Monster' was born.

In 1934 it was rebuilt with concrete, leaving aside the original wood and the manual marker that is still present today was placed. A net was placed at the top so that the balls did not leave the park and damage property on Lansdowne Street.

In 1947 the 'Green Monster' adopted its current color and in 2003 current owner John Henry removed the mesh and replaced it with 269 new seats upstairs that have one of the best views of Fenway Park.

Wally the Green Monster

Wally the Green Monster is the official mascot of the Boston Red Sox. His name comes from the "Green Monster," the nickname for the 40-foot-high wall in Fenway Park's left field.

Wally debuted on April 13, 1997 and lives in the "Green Monster", having since then much success and acceptance among Red Sox fans of all ages, mainly with children.

Wally has a constant rivalry with Raymond, the mascot of the Tampa Bay Rays. Before the Red Sox play a series in Tampa Bay, Raymond pranks Wally or the visiting broadcast booth.

Another rivalry that Wally has is with T.C. Bear of the Minnesota Twins, who compete to win the MLB Home Run Derby Mascot Crown at the All-Star Game.

Red Sox vs Yankees, the biggest rivalry in baseball

The MLB postseason starts tonight with a great rivalry, the oldest classic in Major League Baseball, the confrontation between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees for a wild card berth to the American League divisional series.

A sports rivalry that dates back to the origin of the United States. During the war of independence, Boston was the first city to take up arms against the British, while New York remained one of the main colonies loyal to Europeans.

The first clash between these teams occurred on May 7, 1903, when the Boston Americans and the New York Highlanders faced each other. Like the Red Sox and Yankees, the record of the first meeting between the two teams dates back to April 14, 1913, a game that Boston won 2-1.

But after the sale of Babe Ruth, the great Red Sox star who in five years with the team had won three World Series, the meaning of each match changed forever. The owner of the Reds Sox Harry Frazee, sold his great star Babe Ruth to the Yankees in 1919, and from that moment began a period of bonanza for New Yorkers winning 26 titles in 8 decades and a curse for Boston "The Curse of the Bambino", who until 2004 broke the 86-year drought without championships.

In the 2004 Championship Series the Red Sox eliminated the Yankees after trailing 3 games to 0, the only time a team has risen from a three-game deficit and one of the greatest athletic feats of all times. They came back to travel to the World Series that they won after 86 years and thus ending with the Curse of the Bambino.

The biggest rivalry in baseball has even moved abroad in what was the first regular season series to be held in Europe, in 2019 both teams met in the London Series.

Gerrit Cole RHP #45

For their part, the New York Yankees respond to the affront with right-hander Gerrit Cole, whom they will send as a starter tonight to the mound and who arrives with a 16-8 record and a 3.23 ERA.

In contrast to the Red Sox, the Bronx Bombers pitching is among the best in the league. Opponents have a .231 batting average and he is sixth in the league. His 3.74 ERA is sixth, as is his 1.21 WHIP.

In his last start, Gerrit Cole allowed nine hits and five runs in six innings, taking the loss 6-5 against the Toronto Blue Jays. Tonight at Fenway Park he will have to play a sublime game if he wants to lead the Yankees to the divisional round.

Nathan Eovaldi RHP #17

The Boston Red Sox will open the game with right-hander Nathan Eovaldi, with an 11-9 record with a 3.75 ERA on the season.

Boston's pitching isn't exactly the strongest part of the team, if we look at their performance throughout the regular season and their numbers on the MLB page, as their opponents have a .258 batting average against the Reds. Sox, who is 26th in the league. His 4.26 ERA is 15th, while his 1.38 WHIP is 23rd.

In his last start, Eovaldi allowed four no-run hits in six innings, leading to a 6-0 victory over Baltimore. They'll need another solid start from him if they want to win tonight's game against his hated rival.

This is how the Yankees arrive at the Wild Card

The New York Yankees needed some heroic deeds from Aaron Judge late in Sunday's game to get their ticket to the Wild Card game, and they were rewarded with a showdown against their bitter rivals. A duel that will spark tonight at Fenway Park.

Fortunately for the Bronx, they have won six straight games against the Boston Red Sox and will enter this game with great confidence as they try to advance to the AL Division Series.

On offense, according to data from the official MLB website, New Yorkers have an average of 4.39 runs per game. His .237 batting average is 23rd in the league. His .322 on-base percentage is ninth, while his .407 slugging percentage is 17th in the entire league.

Gone is the regular season, where Judge has been the great bat of New York. He leads the team with a .287 batting average, 39 home runs and 98 RBIs. We'll see how it goes against "The Green Monster".
