The Kennesaw State Owls weren't supposed to be here. The mid-major does have an intriguing amount of talent, with a fabulous catcher that is now a Toronto Blue Jay after last night's MLB Draft, Max Pentecost. However, through a little bit of magic, the Owls have flew their way to the Super Regionals, and they were gunning for an upset vs. the Louisville Cardinals in game one in the three game series.

It was a beautiful evening in Louisville, and freshman phenom Nick Solak took advantage. The youngster knocked in the first runs of the game in the 3rd inning, and the last runs of the game in the 8th. He was 3 for 5 on the night with 3 RBIs.

Kennesaw State made a good run of it, however. In the 4th, a Bo Way single loaded the bases, Chris McGowan knocked in a run, while Brennan Morgan got a controversial hit, which almost resulted in a double-play, but the umpire believed that Morgan was safe.

In the 5th, the Owls got another run after a wild pitch from Louisville starting pitcher Kyle Funkhouser, in which Owl rookie Cornell Nixon scored as the ball sailed behind the catcher.

Other than the 4th and 5th innings, however, Funkhouser (Louisville's workhorse) had a fantastic game, as he was perfect through the first 3 innings. Although command was an issue in the 4th and 5th, Funkhouser proved why he will be a massive entity in next year's MLB draft.

In the 7th and 8th innings, the Cards finally backed up Funkhouser. Their offense had dealt with missed chances all night, and they finally put it all together in these innings. Alex Chittenden, the Cards' 3B, thwacked a single to center to bring home a run in the 7th. This was the start of some momentum, which carried to the 8th inning. There, KSU reliever James Connell was beat up by the top of the Louisville lineup, as leadoff hitter Kyle Gibson (catcher) successfully made a squeeze bunt single to drive in a run, and later, the marvelous Mr. Solak ripped a deep double that sealed the deal for the Cardinals.

KSU was obliterated in the 9th inning by Cardinals all-star closer Nick Burdi, who is potentially the next best closer in MLB. The Cardinals continue their charge for another CWS appearance in Omaha, this year wanted to get the title more than ever.

If KSU wants to come back in this series, Max Pentecost will have to get his bat back in order. He went hitless tonight, which was a massive loss for a team that depends on him so much. This is his moment to shine, and he will have to bounce back tomorrow to give Kennesaw State any sort of a shot.

Louisville will match up with Kennesaw State again tomorrow evening at 7:00 P.M.
