It’s no surprise to see John Cena taking time away from the WWE. He’s a pop culture icon and he reaches much further than the WWE Universe, similarly to how Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson does.

Now, Cena isn’t The Rock, he’s not making some of the most money in Hollywood and neither does he have a number of TV Shows, but Cena has a number of projects of his own outside of the WWE.

Cena has always said that the WWE is his home but he is wanted elsewhere in the entertainment world. His American Grit TV show with the FOX network has just been renewed for additional series so Cena will take time off at some point to film and produce that.

Also, according to reports from NoDQ, Cena is currently scheduled to compete at a WWE Live Event in Shanghai, China on September 10th. This is likely to clash with SmackDown Live’s first WWE Network live event Backlash on September 11th in Richmond, Virginia.

Cena recently spoke with WWE.com

The WWE produces interviews with superstars for use on their website and YouTube and this week it was Cena’s turn to take part in one. The overriding topic of conversation was what he would bring to SmackDown Live following the WWE Draft.

It was clear that the WWE were angling for the Cena is a veteran angle as they discussed his fall from the top picks in the WWE Draft. He was taken seventh overall with clear questions about his future and outside the WWE projects taking up Cena’s time.

The WWE is acknowledging that Cena is huge outside of their universe and that’s not a bad thing. As Cena said himself if somebody sees him hosting the ESPY’s or the Teenage Choice Awards maybe they will want to “tune in on Tuesday nights.”

Is Cena’s time away from the WWE good?

If anybody should be allowed to have time away from the WWE, it’s Cena. He’s helped grow the WWE in the last decade and he’s a huge company man, he never stops promoting and complementing the WWE.

Having more time away from the WWE means that Cena can take some time to recover from recent injuries and knocks. Cena doesn’t want to take time off to recover but having a few weeks off to film a TV show means that Cena is limiting his time taking bumps in a WWE ring.
