Goldberg became a household name in wrestling in the late 1990's in WCW and is one of the few lasting legacies of the now defunct company.

The 49-year-old eventually turned up in WWE in 2003 and while his profile was not at the same level he still achieved some degree of success.

The performer quit the business in 2004 after WrestleMania XX where his match with Brock Lesnar was not well received leaving a bad taste in the fan's mouths.

While his final match in WWE was rather lackluster it has done little to harm the legacy of the veteran who was one of the bright sparks in WCW.

A number of performers made returns to the squared circle such as Sting on last year's game and The Rock two years earlier, and after the much-hyped feature of the Goldberg character, a return to the ring is looking increasingly likely.

Return to WWE?

After appearing in a cinematic trailer for WWE's upcoming video game 2K17, the rumors regarding a return to in-ring action for Goldberg has been in full motion.

The veteran was at Gamescon 2016 in Cologne, Germany and after Brock Lesnar teased a rematch of their infamous 'Mania match the former World Heavyweight Champion left the door open for a return.

He addressed the front cover of the video game suggesting he should be the front image as he said, "As we all know I should be on that damn cover because I killed that guy!"

Fans who were in attendance began to chant "please come back" to which the former football player said, "For you guys, I'll see what I can do."

While it is unknown as to when or if the semi-retired performer will return he teased an appearance at SummerSlam as he spoke of his travel plans.

He said, "Tomorrow morning at 6.55 I will be getting on a train and I am headed to Frankfurt and I am going Frankfurt to New York City and that is all I can say about that."

The 49-year-old continued to tease a return as he said, "I have no issue putting the tights and the boots on and those gloves and ripping people's faces off again."

On who he could face

The speculation regarding when Goldberg would be returning will persist but the question marks over where he would fit into WWE programming are open for suggestion.

The former WCW returned partially to action last year when he came to the aide of Rob Van Dam following his match against Scott Steiner at the Legends of Wrestling show in Citi Field, New York.

Also, earlier this year in January he hit a spear on Steiner once again as he dipped his toe further back into the wrestling world.

However, the landscape of WWE is much different compared to 12 years ago but the performer himself addressed who his opponent could be if he returned.

He said, "The question is who do you want to see me strangle? [There are a] couple new names in there I like that."

Despite the suggestion that the performer is hesitant to a return to the ring he assured the public that the decision to come back was "not up to him" and as far as coming back "he has no idea" if it will happen.

Brock Lesnar will forever be the name on the lips of fans regarding a return opponent and Goldberg addressed on if he would face The Conqueror.

He said, "Brock knows how I feel about him, Brock understands what it is like to be in the ring with me, although it was not the best match in the world by any stretch because you guys knew we were leaving.

"Brock knows the power, Brock has felt the power and Brock knows that I do not play around, I am just like he is and that is what is missing. Somebody to give him the fight just like he gives to everybody else."

It seems that the calls for a rematch are strong and if it ever transpired the atmosphere would likely be less hostile but on ever facing The Beast he said "Brock knows what would happen, Brock knows where I live, Brock knows that I own a Muay Thai gym and Brock can show up anytime he wants."

His final comment may be the most revealing and it seems that Goldberg is now just waiting for that call as he said "I never turn down a challenge. You guys deserve to see it."
