Summary - Stage 5

Mark Cavendish celebrated again in the Tour after five years.

It was a completely quiet day for the riders, at last. So far there have been seven abandonments and with that number of casualties, the peloton set off from Redon... It was only 10 kilometers grouped together when the day's two escapees, Brent Van Moer and Pierre-Luc Perichon, set off.

With no mountain prizes to be contested, the most exciting part of the day was the intermediate sprint in Vitré, which was won by the Lotto Soudal rider.

The escapees accumulated 125 kilometers together... With 14 kilometers to go, Van Moer started his engines and went solo in front of an exhausted Perichon, who was caught by the peloton with 5 km to go. Everything looked set for the Belgian's victory with 500 meters to go, but his legs couldn't take the onslaught of the peloton, which soon absorbed him and it was the veteran Mark Cavendish, who won at the finish line, to celebrate a stage victory in the Tour after five years.
