Whoever advances gets to the final
The first eight athletes in the combined heat rankings qualify for the finals.
Degree of difficulty
The variety of maneuvers available to a skateboarder increases with the height he gains when launching park turns. The degree of difficulty may depend on whether the deck of the skateboard is gripped with the hand while performing maneuvers in the air, which part of the deck is gripped, which hand is used to grip the deck, and the person's posture. The difficulty and originality also increase if the deck is turned in the air, flipped, or if the competitor is able to rotate the body in the air. Other tricks include balancing variations (stalls), grinds, and sliding tricks on the 'edge' of the ramp.
The Skate Park
The Skate Park competition takes place in a hollow field with a series of tricky turns - some resembling large plates and dome-shaped bowls. The athletes achieve heights by climbing the curves at speed and performing incredible maneuvers in the air.
Women's podium
The women's party was celebrated in a double way by the hosts. The gold went to Japan's Sakura Yosozumi, 19, who climbed to the top of the podium to receive the gold medal. Kokona Hiraki, 12, took the silver. At 13, Britain's Sky Brown completed with the bronze.
