Last year Sweden disputed the World Cup where a defeat against the Russian Olympic Committee in the penalty shootout left them out of the quarterfinals finishing fifth with 10 points in the group stage. In the last Olympic Games held in 2018, Sweden finished first in the group stage, but in the quarterfinals they were eliminated in extra time by Germany. In 2014, they fell just short of gold after losing in the final to Canada. In the first match of the group stage they defeated Latvia 3-2. While in the second match they have beaten Slovakia, with one game left to close the group stage they are tied on points with Finland.
How does Finland arrive ?
Finland finished second in the 2021 World Cup in second place in the group. In the quarterfinals they defeated Czech Republic, in the semifinals they beat Germany, but in the final they lost to Canada and had to settle for the silver medal. In the 2018 Olympic Games they lost to Canada in the quarterfinals and in 2014 they won the bronze medal. In this edition they managed to win the first match 6-2 against Slovakia and in the second one they won 1-3 against Latvia, so they are first in the group, but tied on points against Sweden.
Background
Many clashes between Sweden and Finland in field hockey. In the last four times the Swedes have won all four. The most recent match was in the Karjala Cup where Sweden won 1-3. In 2019 they met in the quarterfinals where Finland won 5-4, a tournament that was eventually won by the Finns. In 2018 they met at the Olympic Games in the group stage where Sweden won 3-1.
