Reggio Emilia

Located in the Po Valley, Reggio Emilia is known as the City of the Tricolor, since it was here that the flag that later became the national flag was adopted in 1797.

Famous for its gastronomy, its quality of life and - internationally - for the "most beautiful kindergartens in the world", Reggio Emilia is also a city of art: some of the most important personalities in Italian history were born here, such as the Grand Countess Matilde di Canossa, the poets Matteo Maria Boiardo and Ludovico Ariosto, the painter Antonio Allegri known as Correggio and the photographer Luigi Ghirri. Reggio Emilia is also a city with a strong artisan and industrial vocation. Many of the buildings that bear witness to this have been the subject of skillful interventions of industrial archeology and now house some of the most important industrial, educational and cultural excellences of the territory. Calatrava's bridges and the AV station welcome visitors: the new entrance gates to the city, with their sinuous and light forms, present the Reggio Emilia of the 21st century: a lively city, full of events and festivals - such as Fotografia Europea - and artistic works.

Santarcangelo Di Romagna

Santarcangelo di Romagna, a slow town, is considered the gateway to the Marecchia Valley, the starting point to discover the charming medieval villages and imposing fortresses of the area.

Strolling through its picturesque streets, you will be enchanted by the charm of this ancient town, its evocative atmosphere, the excellent quality of life and the warm welcome of its inhabitants.

The historic center - located on the Colle Giove and characterized by alleys, stairways and lively squares - is dominated by the Rocca Malatestiana and the Civic Tower, known among the locals as "Campanone".

Santarcangelo is also a City of Art, which for over fifty years has hosted the "Festival Internazionale del Teatro in Piazza" (July) and is the cradle of dialectal poetry, with protagonists such as Tonino Guerra.

A hospitable town by vocation, Santarcangelo is rich in events throughout the year, including the ancestral autumn festivals: the "Fiera di San Martino" (November) and the "Fiera di San Michele" (September).

Route of the stage

This stage can be called as a transition stage, it is completely flat, there is not even a mountain prize and we will find 2 intermediate sprints. The first one at 76.5 km and the second one at 127.6 km of the race.

Stage 11 will pass through several important cities of the Emilia-Romagna region and will have a total of 203 kilometers, which will surely be defined in a mass finish and a final sprint.

It is expected that there may be breakaways during the fraction, but that they will not reach the finish alone.

Winner of the previous stage

The winner was Biniam Girgay, who made history by becoming the first African to win a grand tour.

The Eritrean rider set a long sprint to Van Der Poel, who could not hold it and ended up giving up with a few meters to go.

Stage 10 was quiet at the beginning, where 3 riders escaped, but they were neutralized with 20km to go and before the last mountain pass, which served to disarm the group and have only 30 riders in the front, which came to the end and only two disputed the final sprint.
