A foggy morning in Lenzerheide made it impossible to start the last Super Combined of the season by the Downhill. The organization generated a new start list and the first run, a Slalom, could take place in time at 10 hours local time. Three racers were on the top of the Super Combined leader board with 100 points at the start of the day, Marie-Michèle Gagnon, Lara Gut and Lindsey Vonn. As Vonn ended her season due to an injury two weeks ago, today's race promised a great fight between two complete ladies and Wendy Holdener, two points lower on the specialty standings but determined to be to the crystal globe fight.
First run (Slalom)
Wendy Holdener finished the first run at the top position. The Swiss racer got cheered all track long, surely giving her wings. The young woman, doing the best season of her career, is more and more confident on skis. She was very aggressive through the gates.
In second place was Michaela Kirchgasser. The Austrian gave everything showing a very competitive style. She skied nice turning sections in the middle and low part of the track to claim a spot on top of the first run, finishing 0.49 seconds after Holdener.
Marie-Michèle Gagnon ended third of the Slalom run, at 0.67 seconds of Wendy Holdener. The Canadian looked comfortable from the top to the bottom. She won the last Super Combined which took place in Soldeu and then feels confident about her ski. Even if the young woman managed to do a great run, she seemed disappointed in the finish area, knowing she could have done better.
Lara Gut, who is in the fight to the Super Combined crystal globe, finished 9th of the Slalom round. She was determined and committed, giving everything as the crowd was cheering loud on her. You could tell she was already focused on the Super G run when she arrived on the finish area.
Second run (Super G)
Lara Gut seemed calm and relaxed on the starting gate. Confident about her chances, the young woman looked good on track, skiing great turning sections. She finally crossed the line with a huge margin on the provisional leader, enough to hope for a place on the definitive podium.
Marie-Michèle Gagnon gave everything on the slope but couldn't finish ahead of Gut. The Canadian shew great skills on track but that wasn't enough today to claim the win and the overall Super Combined title.
Ending 0.01 seconds ahead of Lara Gut, Michaela Kirchgasser impressed today in Lenzerheide. She skied a complete Super G round, with full commitment and aggressiveness even on a track bathed by fog. The Austrian shew a great celebration on the finish area, knowing she would end on the podium.
Wendy Holdener amazed the crowd with her huge speed and confidence on track. The young woman crossed the finish line with the green light and won the second World Cup of her career. The Swiss woman also clinches the little crystal globe of the Super Combined, an amazing performance for this talented woman who is skiing the best season of her young career.
Final Results :
Wendy Holdener wins the Super Combined in Lenzerheide 0.46 seconds ahead of Michaela Kirchgasser and 0.47 seconds ahead of Lara Gut.
Holdener also wins the little crystal globe of the Super Combined while Lara Gut mathematically assured herself the Women's 2015/16 Alpien Skiing season Overall victory.
The Alpine Skiing season continues and ends next Weekend in Saint-Moritz with the World Cup finals.
