The Walking Dead: “Thank You” Analysis And Recap

Could it be true? Is this for real? Is he really dead?

We are talking about the beloved Glenn Rhee who may have been killed on Sunday night’s episode of The Walking Dead. However, the death of Glenn has not been confirmed yet because of how the situation transpired.

Nicholas and Glenn were surrounded by a huge herd of walkers, as they were standing on top of a trash can when Nicholas decided to blow his own brains out. As Nicholas shot himself in the head, he fell on Glenn, forcing the two to drop to the ground at the feet of the walkers. Then all we saw was the walkers tearing apart a body which could have been Nicholas’ since he was on top of Glenn when they dropped to the floor.

Could this mean that the walkers were feasting on Nicholas instead of Glenn? If so, Glenn could possibly be alive, but the herd was just so enormous that it is impossible for Glenn to survive it, no matter what.

Rick's Life In Danger

Glenn’s life wasn’t the only one in danger. When moving the RV to a designated location to force the herd to follow him, Rick was attacked by members of The Wolves, the same five that were chased out of Alexandria by Morgan in the previous episode.

The writers made it seem like Rick was going to be the next one to go with the unfortunate way things were going for the group. However, Rick survived the attack and murdered all five members of The Wolves and ultimately found baby food in the pocket of one of the attackers.

Rick’s life may not be in the clear just yet, though, as the episode concluded with the RV not functioning and the herd slowly surrounding it.

Did Nicholas Finally Learn?

Nicholas showed a different side of himself in this episode. He was being more assertive and brave, helping Glenn at every chance. Even Glenn recognized his change and praised him for it, until the man committed suicide which could have caused Glenn his life as well.

Nicholas was actually gradually redeeming himself until he gave up. It was pleasant to witness him listen to Glenn and follow his orders, making his death a tad saddening.

Various Deaths

A handful of Alexandrians lost their lives as well in this thrilling episode. One who was blaming Rick for everything was bit almost immediately after badmouthing Rick. Sturgess was another member of Alexandria who found himself as dinner for the walkers after he unintentionally shot Scott in the leg and ditched the group out of fear. Those two deaths didn’t matter much.

What may have mattered was the death of Annie, who was part of Heath and Scott’s group introduced in episode 1 of Season 6. She hurt her ankle when running from walkers early in the episode and eventually wasn’t able to outrun the biters when the group was attempting escape from the pet store.

Another death that may have not mattered to most but was rather devastating was the death of David. We were essentially introduced to David in this episode, so why should he matter, right? But his story was told so well throughout the course of the episode.

David suffered a small bite on his back earlier in the episode and already knew his fate, but he continued to help the group for as long as he could. Already knowing his destiny, David revealed a few details about himself. He apparently has a wife named Betsy who lives in Alexandria. David and Betsy met each other during the apocalypse, similar to Glenn and Maggie.

What actually made David’s death mostly serious was how he was going to leave behind a wife, just like Glenn. It was almost as if the writers were trying to tell us that someone else was going to die and leave behind a wife back home. Also, David wrote a note for Betsy, believing that he would not make it back home. But Michonne refused to grab a hold of his note and told him that he should hold on to it instead because he would be able to make it back. It turned out, he was unable to make it back home to see his wife one last time.

Is Glenn Really Dead?

That’s going to be the question lingering people’s minds for the next week, maybe two weeks since the next episode may just focus on Morgan and his journey. Anyway, Glenn’s death, as mentioned before, has not been confirmed just yet. In fact, during the In Memoriam segment of Talking Dead, Glenn’s name was not mentioned.

Of course everyone was tremendously upset to see his death, but with it being unconfirmed, there may be very little hope of him still being alive. However, that possibility may be very slim since there is no practical way for Glenn to escape death.

On Talking Dead, host Chris Hardwick read a statement provided by Scott Gimple, kindly informing fans of Glenn’s fate.

Dear fans of The Walking Dead, this is a hard story to tell, and when we were planning to tell it, we knew our friends over at Talking Dead would be talking to you about it, and knowing you’d all be talking and feeling and commiserating, I knew we should say something about it, lest our silence say something we didn’t mean to say or not say so I will say this. In some way, we will see Glenn, some version of Glenn or parts of Glenn again, either in flashback or in the current story, to help complete the story.”

Let’s all sit on that for the next few days.
