The injury-ridden Los Angeles Lakers are still seeking a costless agent with their disabled player exception they received over a week ago. They are currently interested in a handful of costless agents that they will work out for the team this week.

According to Marc Stein of ESPN, the Lakers are reportedly going to work out Tyrus Thomas, Jordan Hamilton, Quincy Miller, Gal Mekel, and Dwight Buycks this week. Another player the Lakers had interest in was John Lucas III, but Lucas passed up on the opportunity to play overseas in China.

Gal Mekel seems to be a heavy favorite after the 26-year-old Israeli guard was waived by the Dallas Mavericks before the start of the season. Mekel averaged 2.4 points and 2.0 assists per game during his rookie season.

Jordan Hamilton, meanwhile, was with the Toronto Raptors during training camp and preseason, but he did not make the roster cut. Later on, the Utah Jazz picked him up, only to waive him a few days later. In his three years in the NBA, Hamilton has averaged 5.8 points and 2.8 rebounds.

Quincy Miller was waived by the Denver Nuggets before the start of the season, and he has averaged 4.5 points and 2.5 rebounds in two seasons with Denver.

Dwight Buycks spent his rookie season with the Raptors and was waived during the offseason. The point guard out of Marquette averaged 3.1 points and 1.6 rebounds last season.

Tyrus Thomas has been around the NBA the longest out of all the candidates. In seven years – playing for Chicago and Charlotte, Thomas averaged 7.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks per game. However, he hasn’t played in the NBA since the 2012-2013 season, as injuries and poor work ethic have seen his career dwindle.

The Lakers currently have 15 players on their roster and will need to waive someone before signing any of one of these costless agents. Unfortunately, Xavier Henry, who has struggled since his injuries, may be the one to be waived, but it’s indefinite for now.  Whatever the case, the Lakers are most interested in adding a point guard.

The Lakers are expected to make a decision in the coming weeks.
