It is hard to believe that the college football is about two-thirds done already and there is still so much to be sorted out. We may finally get some clarity this Tuesday, though, when the first ever college football playoff rankings are released. Already the most scrutinized people in America, the playoff selection committee will give us a look at what they value in teams and what it may take for the top teams in the country to make the playoff.

With that said, this week's action did little to change the landscape as we saw a pretty calm week when all was said and done. Yes, #24 LSU did take down #3 Ole Miss 10-7, but this should not really hurt the Rebels in the rankings since that will be viewed as a quality road loss. However, Ole Miss did shoot themselves in the foot if they go on to lose in the Egg Bowl because they are virtually out of the picture with two losses. The other top 25 matchup came out west where #19 Utah finished their sweep of the LA schools with a 24-21 victory over #20 USC on a last second TD by healthy once again QB, Travis Wilson. This gave the Trojans their third lose and most likely booted them out of the rankings altogether.

Most games on Saturday were road trap games for the top teams, but none of the outcomes really would surprise. With Taylor Kelly back, Arizona State beat UW in Seattle, 24-10 in the wind. #13 Ohio State held on at Beaver Stadium, 31-24 in 2 OT's against Penn State after a late Nittany lions FG in regulation. #1 Mississippi State beat Kentucky on the road, 45-31. #22 West Virginia dominated Oklahoma State 34-10 and Alabama took care of business in Volunteer Country, winning by two touchdowns.

The ranked home teams won all of their games including wins by Clemson, Nebraska, Marshall, TCU, Kansas State, Michigan State, and #5 Auburn beating South Carolina at home in a shootout, 42-35.

With the tenth week of the season upcoming, there is a lot of cluster in just about every conference. LSU told the SEC West not to forget about them and Missouri kept pace with Georgia in the SEC East. The Big 12 and Pac-12 continue to look inescapable, even for top schools like Baylor and Oregon. The ACC and Big ten look to be overrun with meddling underachievers like Virginia Tech and Michigan. Even the Mountain West and MAC seems riddled with question mark teams who may or may not be worthy of winning their divisions like Nevada or Toledo.

Still many questions surround the college football world and maybe the biggest one is the most pressing: when will these answers come? Fortunately, the answer to that will come in the next five weeks as fans continue to enjoy another fun but nerve-wracking year of college football. Just let the playoff committee do their job and maybe we can all sleep easier at night knowing that the tough decisions are not up to us.
