It's almost time for Tip Off!

Georgetown last made it out of the round of 32 in 2007, when it advanced to the Final Four. Playing in the challenging Big East, the team settled for an NIT invitation last year after getting bounced as a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament by No. 15 seed Florida Gulf Coast in 2013. Overall, Georgetown is making its 30th appearance in the tournament. The team won the national championship in 1984.

''You keep doing your business, you keep doing what you're supposed to do, eventually people will be quiet,'' coach John Thompson III said in response to a question about whether the tournament win would silence some of the Hoyas' critics. ''To tell you the truth, we're Georgetown. Even if we do so, people may not be quiet. We're used to that.''

The Hoyas are out to prove that their struggles in recent years are over. They took the first step Thursday with an 84-74 victory over Eastern Washington.

Since Krystkowiak arrived as Utah's head coach four years ago, the Utes have improved every season, going from six wins to 21 last year. The team has won 25 so far this season.

Krystkowiak told the team after their first tournament appearance since 2009 - and first win since 2005 - that it was just a step in the process for a Utah program on an upswing.

''This isn't about a goal of reaching any point,'' he said. ''I mentioned it to our fellas, it's about winning the first play of the game, then trying to win the second play. Really, you reflect back on whatever success you had at the end of the season. But it's very much a 'survival of the fittest' mentality that I'm trying to instill in our guys. So we cannot be complacent or satisfied with what we've done up to this point.''

According to Coach Larry  Krystkowiak:  "It's time for the Utah Utes to act like they belong - and aren't just stopping by - at the NCAA Tournament."

Utah's chances will also depend on the play of one of their guards. Senior guard Delon Wright alone might lift Utah into the Sweet 16 as the fifth seed in the South. But the Utes will be a lock to advance should Jakob Poeltl, Jordan Loveridge and Brandon Taylor continue to chip in on both ends of the court. The Hoyas have to be worried about Poeltl, a 7-foot freshman from Austria fresh off an 18-point performance against Stephen F. Austin.

Georgetown's chances will depend on the play of their guards. Between guard D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera and forwards Mikael Hopkins and Josh Smith, the fourth-seed Hoyas have the inside-out combination to easily match up with Utah's plodding pace of play.

The Hoyas did the exact same thing. They turned the ball over 14 times, and Eastern Washington scored 19 points off those turnovers. Being sloppy at this point in the season is a big reason so many teams go home, and niether team can afford to do it.

The key of the game for Utah will be to limit turnovers. This almost cost the Utes their game against Stephen F Austin. Utah turned the ball over 17 times and Stephen F. Austin turned that into 20 points. Utah coach Larry Krystkowiak said, “We didn’t exactly hit a home run with it with our turnovers. We made the game really difficult on ourselves offensively.”

Utah had more tough of an outing, as they would hault a late Stephen F. Austin run and would win the game 57-50. Utah is known for their defensive abilities and they really got after Stephen F. Austin, holding them to 19 in the first half. "They're as good as advertised," Stephen F. Austin coach Brad Underwood said. "On the defensive end they're as solid a basketball team as we have faced all year."

Georgetown tried to use their size against Utah, but Josh Smith, their 6'10" big man picked up two early fouls. This led to small balll which Eastern Washington wanted. The only problem was that Georgetown could shoot as well. Georgetown shot 52% from the field and 47% from behind the arc and would take the game easily 84-74. "I'm glad we were playing basketball. I wouldn't want to wrestle or play football against them," said Eastern Washington coach Jim Hayford. "They were intense."

Both Utah and Georgetown had interesting rides to get to this point. Georgetown had to overcome Eastern Washington and Utah had to overcome Stephen F. Austin.

It’s now down to the round of 32, as the 4-seeded Georgetown Hoyas and the 5-seeded Utah Utes will square off for a chance to get into the Sweet Sixteen.
