College Park, Maryland- All good things must come to an end at one point and time, and for the Princeton Tigers that time was today. The only undefeated women’s basketball team in the country lost to the number one seeded Maryland Terrapins in the Spokane Region of the 2015 NCAA Women’s Tournament. With the 85-70 win, the Terrapins advance to their seventh Sweet Sixteen in school history.

Maryland was able to have some nice offensive possessions. They moved the basketball well, and they were able to knock down some outside jump shots with pretty good regularity. Lexie Brown hit some jumpers, Laurin Mincy hit some jumpers, and Shatori Walker Kimbrough hit a jumper to close the half. The difference maker for Maryland was without question the play of Tierney Pfirman. Pfirman came off the bench and scored 11 points. Princeton’s poise and patience on the offensive glass was really impressive and so was the poise they have had on both ends of the floor. The first half finished up with Maryland out in front, 42-38.

We came out after halftime and I thought we were able to wear them out with our transition. Our defense got a little bit better and we got them on the glass, I thought we did a much better job of controlling the glass,” said Maryland head coach Brenda Frese.

Some key stats to note in the first half. Out of the 17 field goals Princeton made in the first half, 14 of them came inside the paint. Maryland had three players with 10 or more points to end the first half, however one of their star players Brionna Jones had zero points through one half of play and she only had one rebound.

Laurin Mincy and Lexie Brown led the charge for Maryland as both combined for a total of 50 points (Maryland only scored 85  the entire time) and a total of 11 three pointers.

“What a sendoff, her final game here at the XFINITY Center, no better way for Laurin to be able to go out with the five years she has given us” said Frese.

Princeton made the game very close throughout the first half of play but just seemed to fall a sleep for the second half. The Tigers were led by Blake Dietrick, she finished the evening with 26 points, two rebounds and three steals.

The Terrapins move on to face the Duke Blue Devils in the Sweet 16 on March 28.

“They are very good, they have tremendous size, they are really well coached and they are a tremendous team.” Frese on the Duke Blue Devils.
