Hello and welcome to VAVEL USA's coverage of the Iowa Hawkeyes vs. the Indiana Hoosiers live from Memorial Stadium in Bloomington, Indiana! I'm Josh Eastern. We're just over an hour and a half from kickoff.

This might have something to do with the strength of schedule, but when Jordan Howard plays the whole game, the Hoosiers are undefeated. When he is unable to play, this team is 0-4. Howard was one of the top rushers in the country before he went down with an injury and the drop off from him to Devine Redding isn’t the smallest of margins. Having Howard in there as a threat to get a running game going will open up the passing game for the Hoosiers and that is how they will have success in this game. Balance in the rushing and passing attack will be a key in this one. Howard will have his work cut out for him, however, as Iowa has allowed just one rushing touchdown this season (the only team to have done that), and yield just 85.8 yards per game on the ground.

A fun matchup to watch in this one will be this Hawkeyes defense against the high-powered offense of the Hoosiers. Indiana ranks 26th in the country in total offense averaging 467.6 yards per game. Nate Sudfeld at quarterback came eight yards away from setting the single game passing record in their game against Rutgers, and he can sling it around to receivers Mitchell Paige, Simmie Cobbs Jr., and Ricky Jones, who is fifth in the conference in receiving yards with 669.

Defense, however, is where this Hawkeyes team thrives. The most points they have given up in a game this season was 24 against Pittsburgh, and they rank sixth in the country in points allowed at 15.3 per game. Desmond King is a guy to watch in the secondary as well, as he is tied for the most interceptions in the country with seven. Iowa also ranks seventh in the country in total defense, fifth in rush defense, sixth in turnover margin (+10), and eighth in red zone defense.

As for Iowa, they are in the running for a playoff spot and currently are holding down first place in the Big Ten West which would set them up for a berth in the Big Ten Championship game. Junior quarterback CJ Beathard, who controls the offense and doesn’t make too many mistakes, leads this team as he has thrown just three interceptions on the year compared to nine touchdown passes. Their starting running back Jordan Canzeri is battling an ankle injury and it is looking doubtful that he will give it a go. Akrum Wadley and/or LeShun Daniels Jr. should get the nod at the running back spot against the Hoosiers.

Indiana has had quite an up and down season that could have turned in a few different directions if a few things had gone the other way. In their game against Ohio State, the Hoosiers had a chance to win it in the final few seconds but could not pull out a victory. Against Rutgers, they blew a 25-point lead, and blew yet another lead against Michigan State when they hung in the game until the fourth quarter only to let it slip away. This Hoosiers team has had to battle through injuries to starting quarterback Nate Sudfeld and starting running back Jordan Howard, which has hurt their high-powered offense. Those two, however, are now back healthy.

This series goes all the way back to 1912 where Iowa pulled out a 13-6 victory. The Hawkeyes also hold the series advantage against the Hoosiers with a 43-28-4 record and have won five out of the last six matchups. A season ago in Iowa City, the Hawkeyes pulled out a 45-29 win on October 11. Last time this matchup took place in Bloomington was in 2012 where Indiana beat Iowa by a score of 24-21. Iowa holds a 19-18-1 record in Bloomington.

The Indiana Hoosiers (4-4), coached by Kevin Wilson, come into this game off of their bye week and have lost four games in a row after having won their first four matchups of the season. Indiana has yet to win a conference game in 2015.

Coach Kirk Ferentz leads his undefeated Iowa Hawkeyes (8-0) into Saturday’s matchup on the road against the Hoosiers ranked 9th overall in the latest College Football Playoff rankings and will look to remain perfect on the season. They are undefeated for the first time since 2009 when they were 9-0.
