Josh Eastern here posted up inside of Assembly Hall ready for some basketball. Still have some time before tip... about an hour and a half

The buzz around Bloomington today is off of the charts. Students have been lining up for hours already and people are psyched around town for this game.

Read a preview to the game here.

Indiana is looking to get back on track against Purdue as they have lost the last three matchups against their in-state rivals. Senior guard Yogi Ferrell would probably like nothing more than to beat Purdue in the only scheduled meeting of the season. Purdue will be looking to spoil the party in what should be a fantastic setting for basketball at Assembly Hall.

Indiana coach Tom Crean played around with the lineup a bit once Blackmon Jr. went down, but he has settled on Collin Hartman taking the open spot in the starting five. Off of the bench, Crean has Max Bielfeldt on the inside to go along with OG Anunoby who has played some great minutes off of the bench when Indiana has needed it most. Nick Zeisloft is another guard off of the bench who can come in and knock down some threes if needed. Crean has limited it mostly to those three off of the bench, but lately Juwan Morgan has been getting more time, which deepens this Indiana team without Blackmon Jr.

Purdue can score the basketball effectively with 77.3 points per game, but lock down on the defensive side of the floor giving up just 63.5 points per game good for 17th in the country. With that size, you would expect a lot of rebounds, and that is just the case as they average 42.3 rebounds per game good for 5th in the country. When you play Purdue, you have to match their physicality.

Also in the starting five is PJ Thompson who averages just 5.4 points per game and is in a rotation with bench players Ryan Cline, Johnny Hill, and Dakota Mathias. No one averages more than 28.9 minutes per game, which means that this team goes deep into their bench and have some good depth as well.

When you have those three seven-footers, the guard play on this team is overshadowed, but they are the ones that propel this Purdue team. Vince Edwards and Rapheal Davis are two solid Big Ten guards who will give the Hoosiers fits. Edwards is the second leading scorer with 10.1 points per game and averages a team high 3.0 assists per game. As for Davis, the numbers may not suggest that he is a solid shooter at just 41 percent, but if you look at his stats versus Michigan State, those would say otherwise. He averages 9.2 points per game.

As for Purdue, when you look at this Boilermakers team, the size is what jumps off of the page. Purdue has three seven-footers in AJ Hammons, Isaac Haas, and freshman Caleb Swanigan. All three average close to 10 points per game and they bring some tough matchups for opposing teams. Hammons leads the team in points with 14.6 per game to go along with 8.2 rebounds per game. Swanigan who also cracks the starting five as a freshman 9.7 points per game and 8.5 rebounds per game.

James Blackmon Jr. was also a key contributor before undergoing surgery on his knee that is expected to keep him out for the rest of the season. This is a big loss on the offensive side of the floor, but on defense, the Hoosiers might actually become better.

The Hoosiers are off to a great 11-3 start in Big Ten play with some solid road wins at Michigan and Nebraska along with a few blowout wins at home at Assembly Hall, plus a big home win against Iowa. Yogi Ferrell has been the main man for the Indiana as the senior point guard is averaging 16.6 points per game, but hasn’t been playing as well as of late. Another big time contributor has been freshman big man Thomas Bryant who is averaging 11.6 points per game along with 5.5 rebounds.  A big key for the Hoosiers is protecting the rim and Bryant has made tremendous strides since the beginning of the season. Troy Williams (12.5 ppg and 6.2 rpg), who has struggled lately, and Robert Johnson (8.3 ppg) who is playing solid minutes of late, are also key contributors to the offense, which is what this Indiana team is known for as they can score the basketball.

Purdue leads the series between the two schools with a mark of 115-88. Purdue has won the last three meetings between the two schools including the most recent meeting one year ago at Assembly Hall.

The Boilermakers are coached by Matt Painter who is in his eleventh year at the helm of the program in West Lafayette. Painter is 9-8 in his career against Indiana as a head coach and they are looking to beat Indiana for the third straight time. Purdue has won 20 games in eight of his 11 seasons.

The Hoosiers are coached by Tom Crean who comes into his eighth year at the helm of the program. Since taking over in 2008, he has rebuilt Indiana basketball and has put them in contention to compete year in and year out. Crean is almost always under pressure to win at Indiana and this year is no different as they look to get back to the NCAA Tournament.

As for Purdue, they are right in the lurking right on the outside of the Big Ten title with a 9-5 conference record. The Boilermakers are coming off of a home win against Northwestern in which they had a very big rebounding advantage, which is key to their game plan.

Indiana comes into this game against the Boilermakers having won their last game to Nebraska, and are tied atop the Big Ten with an 11-3 conference record. They are looking to keep their undefeated record at home this season.
