Devin McCourty is staying in New England after he came to terms with the Patriots on Monday.  The deal is set for five years at a rate of $47.5 million (28.5 million guaranteed).  McCourty is a fifth year safety out of Rutgers, however he was originally drafted as a cornerback and played as one in the NFL for a few years before making a switch over to free safety.

At 27, this deal will take McCourty into his early 30's and help the Patriots keep consistency at an important position.  The fifth year Patriot had two interceptions and 68 total tackles during the 2014 NFL season.  Having Brandon Browner and Darrelle Revis on the ends made McCourty's job easier, as he was able to focus on securing the center of the field.

While the biggest free-agent for New England is still Darrelle Revis, the importance of McCourty cannot be underestimated.  He comes up with big plays when necessary and provides the team with a veteran presence. McCourty has been a solid presence for New England since he was drafted in 2010, when he accumulated seven interceptions for 110 yards and 82 tackles.

McCourty had five tackles in Supberbowl XXIX against the Seattle Seahawks, helping a bending Patriots defense down the defending champions.  While New England's defense has certainly gotten better since McCourty arrived five years ago, he has developed into an essential player to help that defense take steps and get better.  With the return of Jerod Mayo set for next season, this team could make some strides and it will be Devin McCourty who will be there every play.
