BOURBONNAIS, IL- The Chicago Bears had their second practice in full pads on Monday. There wasn't too much contact but there were a few things to take note of on offense, defense and special teams.

On offense, the offensive line appeared to be overwhelmed by the defensive pass rush at times. And when that happened, all of the Bears quarterbacks, Jay Cutler, Jordan Palmer, Jimmy Clausen and David Fales struggled to some degree.

There were rushed throws, under thrown balls and over thrown balls which all fell for incomplete passes. There were also a couple of balls batted at line, and Cutler even got "sacked" (actually two hand touch since you don't hit quarterbacks in practice) twice.

It's not what Head Coach Marc Trestman or Offensive Coordinator Aaron Kromer wanted, but Defensive Coordinator Mel Tucker was no doubt happy with what he saw. As for the running game, every back on the roster, Matt Forte, Michael Ford, Shaun Draughn, Ka'Deem Carey, Senorise Perry and Jordan Lynch got their fair share of both running and catching the ball.

Fullback Tony Fiammetta was only used as a blocker, and none of the running backs really stood out as they're still being incorporated into the offense. It must be noted however that Forte did have a touchdown catch while Ford dropped two passes.

The Bears are still looking to see who fits in best as the number three wide receiver. Nobody really stood out in that contest on Monday, but Brandon Marshall did make some nice over-the-shoulder catches much to the delight of the fans in attendance.

The tight ends were rotated just like the running backs where. Martellus Bennett (had two touchdown catches), Matthew Mulligan, Zach Miller, Jeron Mastrud, and Dante Rosario each caught at least one pass. But when it came to run blocking, Bennett and Miller stood out above the rest.

Even though the offensive line struggled with pass protection at times, they excelled in run blocking. Guard Eben Britton and center Roberto Garza looked especially strong in that regard.

The defense continues to improve every day and they especially showed it in pass defense. Defensive end Willie Young and defensive tackle Stephen Paea were the ones who got to Cutler during drills while ends Cornelius Washington and Austen Lane both had batted balls. Rookie defensive tackle Will Sutton tricked the offensive line into a couple of false starts as the Bears are starting to definitely look like a much improved team up front.

From the linebacker's stand point, 2012 first round draft pick Shea McClellin is transitioning quite nicely. Linebacker seems like the more natural position for him as on run defense he was able to move from sideline to sideline with the greatest of ease.

In pass coverage he was always in the right place at the right time as he didn't have too many balls thrown his way. But blitzing is where McClellin did the most damage. He didn't get any "sacks" but he was able to skate by blockers and force some bad throws.

Jon Bostic seems to be fitting in well with the nickel package, Khaseem Greene is improving in pass coverage, while rookie DeDe Lattimore got quite a few repetitions as well.

In the secondary the Bears once again played musical chairs with the safety position. Ryan Mundy and Brock Vereen worked with the first unit, but M.D. Jennings, Adrian Wilson, Marcus Trice and Danny McCray all rotated with the other units.

Rookie cornerback Kyle Fuller got plenty of work with the starters on Monday as Tim Jennings was held out of practice. Fuller doesn't seem to be showing any difficulty adjusting to the pro game.

Fuller showed his coverage skills by stopping Brandon Marshall, Alshon Jeffery (who eventually left practice with a sore foot) and Marquess Wilson from making catches in the open field. He didn't do too bad on run defense either.

Finally from the special teams side of things, the punting competition between rookie Pat O'Donnell and second-year man Tress Way is starting to look more one sided. Way is still struggling to get hang time and distance, while O'Donnell keeps putting up 30-plus yard punts with every kick.

Wide receiver Chris Williams got 90-percent of the snaps at punt returner. From the injury side, safties Craig Steltz (groin) and Chris Conte (shoulder) are still listed on the Physically Unable to Peform (PUP) list.

Guard Kyle Long is still battling that viral infection, the aforementioned Tim Jennings was held out because of quadricep soreness, receiver Terrance Tolliver missed his second-straight practice with a toe injury, and defensive tackle Jeremiah Ratiliff was given the day off.

The Bears will get back on the Oliver Nazarene University practice field on Tuesday morning.
