Juan Pablo Montoya has the chance to become the first driver to complete the IndyCar triple crown by winning the three 500-mile races on the schedule, Indianapolis, Fontana and Pocono. This "triple crown," with the three 500-mile races including the Greatest Spectacle in Racing, was introduced in 2013.

With the current form of his Penske team, it definitely looks like Montoya has a far stronger chance of completing the treble of 500-mile race wins than Tony Kanaan and Ryan Hunter-Reay did in 2013 and 2014 after winning their Indianapolis 500's.

Montoya won at Pocono last year, and has placed fourth twice at Fontana, including when he won the CART title in 1999, sadly overshadowed by the death of Greg Moore.

The combination of his previous form at the the remaining two tracks in the triple crown, and his team's strength certainly suggests that Montoya has a serious chance at achieving the feat. The biggest threat will probably come from his teammates, with the biggest outside dangers including the Ganassi drivers, Scott Dixon and Kanaan, and two dark horses who have previously won or ran well at Fontana, Ed Carpenter and Carlos Munoz.

Montoya is also the only current driver to have won two of the three legs of the traditional triple crown of Motorsport which, is comprised of the Monaco Formula 1 Grand Prix, the Indianapolis 500, and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The only driver to have completed the triple crown is Graham Hill, but Montoya is in fine company with the other drivers to have won two of the three being Tazio Nuvolari, Maurice Trintignant, A. J. Foyt, Bruce McLaren and Jochen Rindt. There is an alternative definition by which the Formula 1 championship can count in place of the Monaco Grand Prix, which would make Jacques Villeneuve also a Le Mans win away from the triple crown, but Montoya is the only current driver to have won two of the three parts of the original definition.

It would be very interesting if Montoya decided to give Le Mans a go at some stage, but for now his focus is firmly on the triple crown that he can win in IndyCar. A win on Saturday would give him a career triple crown and put him only one win away from achieving the feat in a single year as well.
