The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series advanced to the historic Watkins Glen International road course for Sunday's Cheez-It 355 at the Glen. With only five races left until the Chase begins, tempers were sure to be high, much like the Xfinity Series race that saw Ty Dillon and Regan Smith get into a heated argument following the checkers.

The first caution of the day came on Lap 24 when Greg Biffle cut his left front tire, then slid through the grass to bring out the caution. That allowed teams to make pit stops just before the fuel window of 30-32 laps. Clint Bowyer was one of the teams to make a stop, but he got penalized for his crew going over the wall too soon. Cole Whitt led the field back to green on Lap 29.

Shortly after the field returned to green, Denny Hamlin’s hood popped open. He managed to run two laps with the hood up, but eventually NASCAR black flagged him, forcing him to go to pit road and fix it. The caution returned on Lap 32 for debris from Hamlin’s hood. The field returned to green on Lap 36 as Brad Keselowski assumed the his first lead of the day.

The caution returned on Lap 45 when Austin Dillon suffered a flat tire. Again, many teams made pit stops during the caution as it was very close to their pit windows anyway. Dillon, in addition to the flat tire, also was issued a penalty for speeding on pit road. Jimmie Johnson won the race off pit road and green flag racing returned on Lap 49 with Brad Keselowksi leading. The field did not complete one full lap before the caution returned for Jamie McMurray, who had problems on the restart. Allmendinger then lost power while the caution was out, which forced him to have to be pushed off by a safety truck.

NASCAR then red flagged the race to clean up liquid that had come from Mcmurray. When the yellow flag returned, Jeff Gordon made a pit stop, and was penalized for driving through too many pit boxes entering his own.

The yellow flag returned on Lap 56 when Tony Stewart stopped on track and needed to be pushed off by a safety truck. This caution brought most of the leaders to pit road for pit stops. It was a relatively uneventful round of stops, except for Johnson and Mcmurray getting caught speeding on pit road.

When the green flag returned, they would race to the end caution free, as Kevin Harvick took the lead and did not give it up until the final two turns when he ran out of fuel. Joey Logano then passed Harvick in Turn 6, holding on to the checkers while Harvick was able to cross the finish line in third position, behind Kyle Busch.

Rounding out the top-five behind these three were Matt Kenseth and Kurt Busch.

Next week, the series moves to Michigan International Speedway for the Pure Michigan 400.
