5:00 pm ET: We're very close to the command and green flag for the final race of the 2015 Verizon IndyCar Series. Let's see a safe and exciting race and crown the champion today.

4:55 pm ET: The drivers are making their way to their cars to get strapped in. The command to start engines will be given shortly.

4:55 pm ET: The invocation has been given and the anthem is being performed as all drivers stand in front of the field.

4:50 pm ET: There is a video tribute to Justin Wilson being shown on the screens at Sonoma Raceway. Justin's number 25 is being sky written over the track and the Great Britain national anthem is being played in his honor.

4:45 pm ET: There is a huge crowd on the grid which is being cleared of non-essential personnel as the time to go racing nears.

4:45 pm ET: If Juan Pablo Montoya wins the championship today, it will be 16 years since he last won the championship in 1999. This would be the longest time span between series titles; the previous record was 15 years held by Mario Andretti.

4:35 pm ET: There are multiple scenarios for the championship with six drivers still mathmatically in the running. Some of the most probable outcomes are as follows. Juan Pablo Montoya will clinch the title if he finishes first, second or third. If Graham Rahal wins AND Montoya finishes fourth or worse, Rahal will be crowned the champion. Scott Dixon will take the title if he wins the race AND Montoya finishes sixth of worse. With 100 points awarded to the winner and bonus points for leading a lap and leading the most laps it will be exciting to watch how the race unfolds.

4:25 pm ET: It is getting closer to the green flag for the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma. The teams are making last minute adjustments to the cars and the drivers are going through their pre-race rituals. The weather forecast calls for perfect race conditions.

4:20 pm ET: Stefan Wilson is at Sonoma to witness the tributes to his late brother Justin. Stefan has one IndyCar Series start at Baltimore in 2013. Oriol Servia will carry a small wooden disk in his pocket during the race; it has Justin's initials and helmet.

4:10 pm ET: NBC Sports is showing a touching Justin Wilson tribute narrated by Robin Miller. Justin was well-loved by his fellow competitors, fans and the media and he will be missed.

4:00 pm ET: Chevrolet has clinched its fourth Manufacturers Championship in a row. The Chevrolet teams have won nine of 15 races run so far this season as well as winning every pole position. Of the six drivers still in contention to win the series championship, only one, Graham Rahal, drives a Honda.

3:50 pm ET: All drivers in today's GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma are graciously donating their helmets to the upcoming aution which will be held to benefit the Justin Wilson Children's Fund. The specifics of the auction have not been announced but information will be avaiable soon at indycar.com.

3:45 pm ET: This will be the 10th consecutive year that the Verizon IndyCar Series championship has been decided in the final race of the season. Will Power clinched the 2014 title at the finale at Auto Club Speedway. The addition of double points in this year's 16th and final race will add to the excitement of the crowning the 2015 champion.

3:35 pm ET: Will Power broke his own track record during qualifying for the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma. This is the sixth track record that has been broken in 2015, all on road and street courses. The addition of the aero kits have certainly played a role in the faster times. The Team Penske domination of pole positions is also notable. Aside from one pole from Josef Newgarden (Milwaukee) and two by Chip Ganassi Racing driver Scott Dixon (Indianapolis 500 and Mid-Ohio), all races in 2015 have started with a Penske Chevrolet on the pole.  Power broke four track records himself (St. Petersburg, Indianapolis road course, Detroit and Sonoma). Helio Castroneves broke the track record at Long Beach which had held up since 2008. Dixon set the fastest lap at Mid-Ohio and bettered a record which had been unbroken since 2000.

3:15 pm ET: Oriol Servia was selected by the family of the late Justin Wilson to drive the No. 25 Andretti Autosport Honda at Sonoma. But the Spaniard has not been in an IndyCar since the Indianapolis 500 on May 24 and has not driven on a road course in over a year. He is racing to honor Wilson and wants to run the best race he can in tribute to his friend. Servia is starting 19th and realizes he will not be much of a factor in the race. He is very far behind the rest of the field in understanding the car; this will be his first experience with the new aero package. "I feel like I don't know which planet I landed on," says Servia. "But I'm definitely in the game and I'm feeling more and more at home in the car." But he is clear about his role will be in the race. "Everybody understands what Justin meant and what we are trying to do to honor him." Seeing the No. 25 Honda in the field will help all drivers and fans honor Justin Wilson and the impact he made on those who knew him. #BADASSWILSON

3:10 pm ET: Will Power was fastest in the morning warm-up session at Sonoma Raceway. Takuma Sato was second fast, followed by Simon Pagenaud, Graham Rahal and Sebastien Bourdais. Points leader Juan Pablo Montoya was ninth.

More will be added here as the green flag nears this afternoon at 5:07 pm ET, but stay tuned to @VAVELIndyCar on Twitter for more.

News and notes are below to get you up to speed ahead of today's finale round of the 2015 Verizon IndyCar Series season! Additionally, click here for the collection of all of VAVEL USA's coverage of this weekend's on-track action from Sonoma Raceway.

Will Power of Team Penske broke his own track record in qualifying when he earned pole position for today's race with a time of 1:16.2597. This is Power's sixth pole of the season, tying a record last set in 2008 by Scott Dixon. Today will mark the 42nd start from pole position of his career, putting him fifth on the all-time list. He took the pole on the primary black tires; he was the only driver in the Fast Six not on the softer compound red tires. He is still in contention for the title although he is in fourth place, 62 points behind Montoya.

Team Penske driver Juan Pablo Montoya has led the championship points since his win at St. Petersburg on March 29 to get the season underway. He also won the 99th Running of the Indianapolis 500, his second victory in the Greatest Spectacle in Racing in just three attempts in his career. He has five total podium finishes and nine top fives this season, and has led 145 laps in eight of the 15 races contested this year. He enters today's finale with a 34-point lead over second place Graham Rahal. Montoya will start sixth on the grid in today's finale round. "I feel if we run a smart day all day, we'll be fine," says Montoya. "It's double points so it's open for anything."

Graham Rahal of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing has made an impressive charge up the points standings in the last handful of rounds. He was fifth after a 23rd place finish at Race 1 in Detroit on May 30. He rebounded to finish third in Race 2 the next day and has not looked back. Over the next seven races, he scored six top-10 finishes including two victories at Auto Club Speedway and Mid-Ohio. He pulled within nine points of leader Montoya heading to last weekend's ABC Supply 500 at Pocono, however a crash with Tristan Vautier caused him to finish in 20th place. This is the first time of his career that Rahal has been in the running for a championship; his previous best finish was seventh in the 2007 Champ Car series. He starts fifth next to Montoya on the grid today. "We're going to go all out, do the best we possibly can and see what happens," says Rahal. "I still have a lot of confidence going into race weekend."

Scott Dixon of Chip Ganassi Racing is third in the championship and has had a generally steady season. He has two victories (streets of Long Beach and Texas) as well as two poles (Indianapolis 500 and Mid-Ohio) this season. He has also led nine races for a total of 272 laps led this year and had been running at the finish of 14 of the 15 races. He is making his 191st consecutive Indy car race start this weekend. Last year, Dixon started third but won at Sonoma. He is third in the points, 47 points behind Montoya and 13 behind Rahal.

Also still in contention for the series title is Team Penske driver Helio Castroneves. He is fifth in the points, 77 points behind Montoya. The three-time Indianapolis 500 winner has yet to win a race in 2015 although he has started on pole four times, including last week at Pocono. He starts 15th at Sonoma today after failing to advance to Round 2 qualifying from Group 1 of Round 1.

The sixth driver still in the running for the title is CFH Racing driver Josef Newgarden. Newgarden is also in the midst of the best season of his career with two race wins to his name (Barber Motorsports Park and streets of Toronto). He is 87 points behind leader Juan Pablo Montoya and it is therefore a huge longshot that he would pull something incredible off and win the title in today's race; he would need a large sum of misfortune to strike Montoya and Rahal for that to happen. He is starting on the front row in second place next to polesitter Power. With double points at stake, he will need a win and a poor showing by Montoya to take the championship away from the other contenders.

Returning to the series after a one year absence is Russian driver Mikhail Aleshin, who will pilot the No. 77 Schmidt Peterson Motorsports Honda in today's race. Aleshin suffered injuries in a post-qualifying practice crash at Auto Club Speedway during last year's finale round. "It was a long journey to make it up here again," says Aleshin. "I am happy to be back with the team." He is hoping to secure a ride for the entire 2016 season.

As a prelude to the race and as a tribute to Wilson, several IndyCars drove across the Golden Gate bridge on Thursday. Marco Andretti led the way in Justin Wilson's No. 25 Andretti Autosport Honda. "We're trying to stay focused on the next race because we know Justin would want us to do that," said Andretti. "At the same time, it's a tremendous loss." Driving in formation behind Andretti were championship contenders Will PowerGraham Rahal and Josef Newgarden in their racecars. James Hinchcliffe drove the IndyCar Racing Experience two-seater with the Astor Cup, the championship trophy, in the back seat. This is the first time Hinchcliffe has been in an Indy car since his serious accident during practice for the Indianapolis 500 back on May 18. The Mayor of Hinchtown has been growing a beard since his accident and said he would not shave until he gets back into a race car. "Technically, I put on my suit, my boots, my helmet, my gloves and I got in a car and drove it," says Hinchcliffe. "So, I don't know if this is a gray area." He took a poll on Twitter and asked if he should shave or not. The results were close, but shave won by less than ten votes - and hence, the Mayor's beard is gone.

Firestone will donate $25, in honor of Wilson's car number, to the Wilson Children's Fund for every tire used during the weekend, including during practice, qualifying and the race. American Honda and HPD will contribute $50 per lap completed by each of the 13 Honda-powered cars entered in the race. This donation could total more than $55,000 if all cars finish on the lead lap.

All 25 cars in the field are carrying stickers in memory of Justin Wilson featuring his helmet and the hashtag #BadassWilson. Stickers and T-shirts with a similar design on them are on sale with the proceeds going to a trust set up to benefit his daughters. It has been reported that all 3,000 shirts were sold at Sonoma on Friday. They are also available right here from INDYCAR. Oriol Servia was chosen by the Wilson family to drive the No. 25 Andretti Autosport Honda for today's race.

The series travels to Sonoma with heavy hearts after the tragic death of Justin Wilson following injuries he suffered in a freak accident during last weekend's ABC Supply 500 at Pocono Raceway. He was hit in the head by debris from the car of Sage Karam who spun in a single car incident ahead of him in Turn 1. Wilson was airlifted to the hospital with severe head injuries and passed away the following day. He was an organ donor and his family says that six people benefited from his generosity. Wilson is survived by his wife Julia, his daughters Jessica and Jane, his brother Stefan and his parents.

The GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma is the 16th and final race of the 2015 Verizon IndyCar Series season. The championship will be decided today, with six drivers mathematically still eligible to win the Astor Cup before the green flag waves. Juan Pablo Montoya has led the championship since his win at the opening race of the season on the streets of St. Petersburg. He is being pursued most closely by Graham Rahal, who is having the best season of this career having won two races thus far. Also still in the running are defending champion Will Power, Helio Castroneves, Scott Dixon and Josef Newgarden. Note that today's race also features a double points payout; this will play a huge part in how things are when the day is done and a champion is to be crowned.
