Big changes are ahead for the worldwide second-largest prototype class, with the announcement revealing Gibson Technology as the spec-engine supplier for 2017 FIA World Endurance Championship LMP2 class.

For the FIA, ACO and IMSA, Gibson was the engine of choice, winning the selection process against four other contenders, including Judd and Mechachrome.

Where the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and the European Le Mans Series will allow LMP2 entries with multiple engine manufacturers, the four-liter normally-aspirated 600 horsepower vertical-aligned eight cylinder engine built by Gibson will be eligible for both of the aforementioned series whereas the WEC LMP2 class will be equipped with the Gibson engine only.

Any branding from car manufacturers is prohibited to appear on the Gibson-powered LMP2 cars, although expections can be made  for team-specific and boutique car makers branding under the approval of the FIA Endurance Commission.

Cosworth to supply electronic units

Meanwhile every LMP2 car worldwide will run with ECU provided by the legendary engine builder Cosworth.

Additionally, the IMSA series will run with Cosworth ECU, which will play an integral part in the Balance of Performance proceedings.

Current LMP2 regulations in the FIA World Endurance Championship will run until the end of 2016, with the current chassis to compete in the ELMS and Asian Le Mans Series until at least 2019.
