Thursday afternoon's Practice 2 for this weekend's Petit Le Mans season finale was held during rainy conditions that caused the on-track action to slow down - quite literally.

Hand paces Practice 2

Topping the wet session was Joey Hand in the No. 01 Chip Ganassi Racing Riley-Ford Daytona Prototype that won the last round at Circuit of The Americas two weeks ago. Hand turned a 1:16.937 in the early stages of the session before the rain really began to come down about 15 minutes into the hour-long practice session.

Second-quickest behind the Ganassi entry was the DeltaWing, which turned a best lap of 1:17.155, good enough for 0.218 seconds slower than Hand's leading time.

Rounding out the top-five overall, all from the Prototype class, were the Nos. 31 and 5 of Action Express Racing in third and fourth respectively, followed by the No. 60 Ligier JS P2 Honda of Michael Shank Racing which paced the much drier Practice 1 from earlier on Thursday.

Topping the Prototype Challenge class was Sean Rayhall in the No. 88 ORECA FLM09 of Starworks Motorsport, while the No. 911 Porsche North America and No. 33 Riley Motorsports cars paced GTLM and GTD with Patrick Pilet and Jeroen Bleekemolen at the controls of each.

Crash for Mikhail Goikhberg

At the wheel of the No. 85 JDC/Miller Motorsports ORECA FLM09, Mikhail Goikhberg made heavy contact with the wall at Turn 5 at the bottom of the esses bringing out a red flag.

The Russian-Canadian driver was evaluated and released, but the JDC/Miller team will be kept busy repairing the car to compete for the remainder of the weekend; no word on them joining fellow PC team Performance Tech Motorsports in retiring from the weekend is expected at this time.

The car's right rear quarter panel and rear wing assembly will require the most attention following Goikhberg's crash.

Takers & leavers in the wet

The final half of the one-hour session featured far fewer cars on track compared to when the red flag session (which was caused by the rain/standing water) ended and the No. 007 TRG-AMR Aston Martin V12 Vantage GT3, No. 97 Turner Motorsport BMW Z4 GT3 and No. 44 Magnus Racing Porsche 911 GT America were among several GT Daytona "takers."

Notable entries that were absent from the track and didn't turn laps during Practice 2 are the No. 70 Mazda Motorsports SKYACTIV Diesel Prototype as well as the No. 8 Starworks ORECA FLM09. A small oil leak saw the LMP2-style Mazda remain in the paddock for the session while, although it went to pit lane, the Starworks No. 8 didn't go out on track to turn a single lap.

Next up for the TUDOR Championship's finale weekend at Road Atlanta is night practice, set for 7:30 - 9:00 pm ET on Thursday evening.
