The Petit Le Mans qualifying has been completed at Road Atlanta in wet conditions. The difficult conditions suited well for the GT Le Mans cars with the fastest of them being faster than all but the top three of the Prototype class.

Prototype

Richard Westbrook qualified the championship-leading No. 90 VisitFlorida.com Racing Chevrolet Corvette DP to a dominant pole position with a lap time of 1:27.860. The team's closest titlerival, six points behind entering the final race of the year tomorrow, the No. 5 Action Express Racing Corvette DP driven by Christian Fittipaldi, was second, with a best lap good enough for 1.060 seconds behind Westbrook. Joey Hand qualified the No. 01 Chip Ganassi Racing Ford Riley DP third with a fastesst lap that was 1.767 seconds from leader. The gap that Westbrook separated himself from Fittipaldi and the rest of the Prototype field from of a full second was astounding, and the points-leading car of VisitFlorida.com Racing will begin the final 10 hours of the season from pole.

Dane Cameron in the No. 31 Action Express Corvette DP put the car fifth on the grid with a best lap that was 3.024 seconds slower than Westbrook's blistering pace in the soaked conditions.

The Prototype qualifying had only six cars on track as the No. 60 Michael Shank Racing Ligier-Honda following yesterday's crash and the Mazda Motorsports prototypes did not run in the qualifying, with Mazda citing the wet conditions.

Prototype Challenge

The lead of the Prototype Challenge changed twice after the checkered flag came out to end the session. First, Johnny Mowlem took the provisional pole for the No. 16 BAR1 Motorsports entry. Then Tom Kimber-Smith completed his final lap of the session, a time that was 0.546 seconds quicker than Mowlem's, earning his first ever PC class pole at the wheel of the No. 52 PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports entry with a lap time of 1:32.378.

Third fastest was Alex Popow for the No. 88 Starworks Motorsport entry, 1.525 seconds slower than Kimber-Smith's pace.

The PC championship-leading No. 54 CORE autosport entry was the slowest of the PC qualifying, over 10 seconds from the class pole. Though with only seven PC entries, it only needs to be classified in the race to secure the title, despite the second-placed entry earning the class pole.

GT Le Mans

Earl Bamber qualified the No. 912 Porsche North America 911 RSR to the GT Le Mans pole position - though not without drama.

With four and a half minutes remaining, he went off track at the Esses, bringing a red flag which eventually finished the session. As a result, Bamber lost his best lap time (1:30.074) for causing the red flag, yet his second-best lap of 1:30.304 was still enough to beat his teammate Nick Tandy in the No. 911 Porsche by 0.094 seconds.

Oliver Gavin qualified the No. 4 Corvette Racing C7.R to third place on the GTLM grid, 1.381 seconds short of Bamber's time.

Lucas Luhr qualified the No. 24 BMW Team RLL Z4 GTE to fourth place with a fastest lap that was 0.078 seconds behind third-placed Gavin.

While the championship-leading No. 911 Porsche entry will start in second place, its closest rival, the No. 25 BMW entry three points behind, will start only in sixth place.

Bamber's crash wasn't the only drama in the GTLM qualifying session. At the beginning of the session, Bryan Sellers in the No. 17 Team Falken Tire Porsche went off at the Esses and hit the barriers, causing heavy damage to the right rear of the car. He was able to return to the pits under his own power to keep the session running green.

GT Daytona

Cameron Lawrence qualified the No. 93 Riley Motorsports Dodge Viper to the GTD class pole on his final lap of the session, beating Spencer Pumpelly of the No. 73 Park Place Motorsports Porsche by 0.591 seconds. Third-fastest was Leh Keen in the No. 22 Alex Job Racing Porsche, just 0.013 seconds behind the second-placed Pumpelly.

The top three dominated the qualifying; fourth-fastest, Guy Cosmo in the No. 45 Flying Lizard Motorsports Audi, was 3.309 seconds slower than the class polesitter.

The top three of the GT Daytona championship are divided by only three points before Saturday's final race of the year. Of those teams, the third-placed Scuderia Corsa had the best qualifying with Jeff Segal putting the No. 63 Ferrari sixth on the grid. Championship leader Christina Nielsen qualified the No. 007 TRG-AMR Aston Martin to eighth place and championship second-placed Dion von Moltke qualified the No. 49 Paul Miller Racing Audi to ninth on the grid.

The green flag for the 10-hour Petit Le Mans will be waved at 11:10 am ET on Saturday.
