What a way to start the 2016 season in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, the closest finish in the history of the Daytona 500 as Denny Hamlin was victorious over Martin Truex Jr by 0.011 seconds.

Hamlin has booked his spot in the Chase after a stunning move at the end of the race coming out of turn four to shoot from fourth to first and claim his first Daytona 500 victory.

Some fans may cry: "But there was no Big One!", which is what NASCAR fans call the major wreck that normally occurs at a restrictor plate race.

Many fans would have come away from the race glad there wasn't one because the action of the pack for 200 laps was breathtaking and it was good to see no one car trains riding around the track for long periods of time.

As the cars came out of turn four and onto the front stretch fans would have stood up and stared open mouthed at the action unfolding as Hamlin positioned himself perfectly and then had a door to door battle with Truex Jr.

Over the last few years at Daytona and Talladega there has been a lull in the action during the race when a long line of cars forms and rides single file, the biggest breakaway today was a small eight cars out of 40.

Thankfully there were no random caution flags during the race, they were all thrown for genuine reasons another bonus for the millions tuned in as it kept the action fast and furious.

Looking Ahead

This week at Atlanta Motor Speedway the cars will have less downforce which the drivers called for and it could make the racing just as exciting as we witnessed this week at the 'World Centre of Racing'.

Atlanta is a track that drivers, such as six time champion Jimmie Johnson, have described as one of hardest tracks to drive because it is so challenging for the full race and if a driver can get to Victory Lane they deserve it.

Atlanta has replaced the one-mile oval of Phoenix Motor Speedway on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series calendar for the first time in 2016 and will bring a new type of racing to the race that usually follows Daytona.

The Daytona 500 is normally a good spectacle but there was just something about the 58th running that would have kept people on the edge of their seats for the full 500 miles.

As the next few weeks of the season shape up we will see what the racing is like on Intermediate and Short Tracks for the Cup Series and if the action is as exciting as today, well you won't want to miss a lap.

Buckle up and hold on because 2016 could be one of the greatest seasons in the sports history.
