The wait is over! Thirteen years after claiming their ninth UEFA Champions League/European Cup trophy, Real Madrid defeated city rivals Atletico Madrid 4-1 in Lisbon at the Estadio da Luz to win "La Decima" (their tenth UEFA Champions League/European Cup trophy), getting goals from Sergio Ramos (90+3'), Gareth Bale (110'), Marcelo (118') and (120') in the process.

Atletico Madrid, riding high on their La Liga victory had looked to complete their dream season with their first UEFA Champions League trophy. The Rojiblancos opened the match with much more of the early possession and initiative. But very early on, they would lose talismanic striker Diego Costa to reaggrivating the leg injury that knocked the naturalized Spain international out of their title-winning draw against FC BarcelonaAdrian came in, and the Atleti pressure resulted in a 27th minute goal by Diego Godin. The Argentine put a looping header past Real Madrid keeper Iker Casillas (who could not handle the delivered ball cleanly.

Atletico would have most of the possession and pressure as the game continued on. But by the last ten minutes, Los Blancos took over the match and forced Atleti to spend most of their time defending inside their own 18. Real Madrid would force the Rojiblancos to consistently foul to stop the pressure--and were hanging on by the time second half stoppage time came around. In the third midded of second half stoppage run, a well-delivered corner kick by Luka Modric found Sergio Ramos who headed home the equalizer to force added extra time.

In the first stanza of added extra time, Atletico Madrid continued to show their fatigue as Los Blancos continued to pressure them inside and around their 18. But it would not be until the fifth minute of the second half of added extra time in which Los Blancos would find their breakthrough. After a tricky, slaloming run, Angel di Maria fired a shot that was initially stopped by Atletico keeper Thibault Courtois, but the rebound fell to Gareth Bale who was unmarked. The Wales international put his header past the Belgian keeper to give Real Madrid the 2-1 lead and forced the Rojiblancos to come out of their defensive shell.

That was when everything would break down for Diego Simeone's men, as Real Madrid rarely let the Rojiblancos out of their own defensive half. And on one such run in the 118th minute, Marcelo worked past several Atletico defenders and fired a shot inside the near post, beating Thibault Courtois to stretch Real Madrid's lead to 3-1.

Displeased with the lack of a foul call on Marcelo and with his team's defending, Diego Simeone ran out on the pitch to confront a Real Madrid player, and entertained a crowd, and the Argentine manager was eventually expelled off the pitch. Soon after, a clumsy challenge from a tired Atletico defender gave Real Madrid a last minute opportunity to stretch the lead to three. Cristiano Ronaldo put the penalty high, right, and past the diving Courtois to convert on the opportunity and cement La Decima for the Rojiblancos
