There are a lot of people in the soccer community that would love for the Seattle Sounders to play in their own venue rather than share it with the NFL's Seattle Seahawks. Those people will have to wait at least another thirteen years before that is even a possibility. The Sounders just added ten more years to their existing lease agreement with CenturyLink Field.

The Sounders could be considering as one of the most successful expansion teams in MLS history. Since they entered the league in 2009, the Sounders have a record of 95-55-48 (win-loss-tie). They have won four Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup titles, 2009-2011 and 2014. They also claimed their first even Supporters' Shield in 2014.

“CenturyLink Field has been home to many of our club’s most important achievements, including last season’s Supporters’ Shield-clinching win and back-to-back Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup victories in 2010 and 2011,” said Sounders FC Owner Adrian Hanauer“We are proud to call the venue home, and we look forward to many more milestones and victories in front of our passionate and loyal fans."

The Sounders are also known for setting attendance records every year since they have been in the league, sans 2014. In 2009, they set the MLS record with 30,897 and have increased to 44,038. To meet their demand, the Sounders opened up three more sections in the 300 level of CenturyLink and increased their capacity from 38,300 to 39,115 at the beginning of the 2015 MLS season.

“Since the inception of our organization, CenturyLink Field has played a critical role in the growth, development and perception of our club, as has our partnership with the Seattle Seahawks and First & Goal Inc.,” said Sounders FC Majority Owner Joe Roth. “CenturyLink Field is a premier facility that gives our players, fans and partners a first-class experience. For these reasons and more, we are pleased to call CenturyLink our long-term home, as Sounders FC continues to set the standard for our sport on and off the field.”

“Sounders FC have been wonderful partners and have established themselves as the standard in Major League Soccer,” said Seahawks and First & Goal President Peter McLoughlin. “CenturyLink Field is a world-class facility which helps create a great environment to watch soccer.”

Now if only the stadium, the Seahawks and the Sounders can find a solution to their turf issues.

“On the turf, we’re excited that we’ll get a new turf field for our 2016 season,” said Hanauer. “Certainly the turf is on its last legs and for us, we’re excited about a new installation. As part of our agreement, the turf will get replaced every four years or earlier – if the two organizations agree – which is a step in the right direction for us. I’d be lying if I said it wouldn’t have made us happier to have the turf replaced more often, but we understand that we’re in a multi-sport, multiuse stadium in a long-term lease and in a negotiations like this, you get some of the things you’re looking for and you have to give some things.”
