There was not much time left in stoppage time when Olmes Garcia found the match winner in the 90+3' as Real Salt Lake defeated Sporting Kansas City by a score of 2-1 at the RioTinto Stadium.

Espinoza had the first good opportunity of the match in the 5th minute as he saw his shot from outside of the box go just over the frame of the goal. However, it looked as if Nick Rimando got a fingertip on the ball and as a result, Sporting Kansas City were awarded with a corner which came to nothing in the end.

Four minutes later is when Real Salt Lake got a look at goal and it came off of a corner. Morales whipped an out-swinging ball and Justin Glad snapped a header towards the ground and kept it on frame.

Real Salt Lake Strikes Early

The opening goal of the match came in the 15th minute following another set piece situation, this time from an indirect free kick. Javier Morales sent in a wonderful ball to the back post and Sebastian Jaime had a free header that he turned into the left side of the goal. This was a relief for the Argentine forward because this was his first goal in Major League Soccer.

This was a game of set piece chances in the early going. Sporting Kansas City had one of their own in minute 19 where Graham Zusi delivered the ball into a dangerous area that none of his teammates could get any kind of deflection.

Graham Zusi made a great individual run down the right side and laid the ball off to Olave who just rocketed his ball wide of the far post in the 24th minute. Then Devon Sandoval nearly got his clubs second goal of the match a minute later, but his header slammed off the left post.

Rimando had the far post covered, however, Németh still tried his luck from outside the 18 yard box and his curling effort missed inches wide. Down the other end, Real Salt Lake had another couple of chances to score and Joao Plata's effort fired wide of the goal.

30th minute equalizer

After a frantic opening thirty minutes, Sporting Kansas City found the equalizing goal through the sensational Dom Dwyer. It started with some pressure high up the pitch. Benny Feilhaber received the ball in the middle of the pitch, near the top of the half circle and slipped the ball through to the goal scorer who finished it with excellent placement behind Rimando.

There was not much action for the rest of the half after the Dwyer goal. RSL did have four consecutive corners though a couple of minutes following the goal and SKC defended them well to keep the score all knotted up at one at halftime.

Krisztián Németh looked to slide a ball across to Dwyer, but Glad was there at the right spot to create a crucial interception in the early goings of the second half.

Chippy start to second half

It was a slow start to the second half with both clubs going hard into challenges. This forced the ref to have to blow his whistle often and as a result, there was not really any flow in the first ten minutes or so.

Dom Dwyer nearly capped off his brace in the 63rd minute of the match, but Nick Rimando was there yet again to deny the English forward. The service from Anibaba was what made it all possible with a perfectly weighted ball from right side of the pitch.

Devon Sandoval used his strength to fight off Anibaba and was nearly rewarded for his efforts with 15 minutes left to go in the match. However, his chipped effort fell on top of the goal.

Own goal decides the match in stoppage time

Real Salt Lake was pushing for a goal in the last five minutes of the match and won corner after corner. As a result of that, there was a sense that the home club could snatch a victory and they did just that in the third minute of stoppage time.

This goal was started with a spectacular ball from the Javier Morales, who was involved in the build up all match long, and sent a ball to Olmes Garcia through three Sporting defenders. The 22-year-old Colombian shot the ball towards the far post of the goal and his effort deflected off of Kevin Ellis and into the back of the net.

Jeff Cassar really needed this victory and it should build confidence within his squad as they look to continue to push towards the playoffs after a sub-par start to the season. His club will face the New York Red Bulls this Wednesday while Sporting Kansas City has until Sunday evening to work out the kinks when they face off against the Colorado Rapids.
