It was very surprsing to see this game go to penalties tied at zero. With the likes of Lionel Messi, James Rodriguez, and Sergio Aguero amongst others, the game surely must have had a goal. Argentina started on the attack right from the get go as Aguero headed an Angel Di Maria corner just over the bar and the tone was set. Argentina was coming out to attack and Colombia's defense had to be at their best today. In the 25th minute, the golden chance came. Aguero's flick from a Javier Pastore cross was kicked out by David Ospina and it fell to Messi right in front of goal but his header was somehow saved by Ospina. If not for the Arsenal man, Colombia could have been blown out in this game. Then Ospina made another good save when a Argentina cross deflected off of Cristián Zapata but Ospina kept it out. It was a first half controlled mostly by Argentina and Colombia's attack looked non existent. Much could be pointed at the fact that Monaco striker Radamel Falcao was not in the starting lineup and came on in the second half although his form in the past year suggests that his impact would have been minimal.

The storyline in the second half was just the same. Argentina getting golden chances but could not finish them. Nicolás Otamendi had a header cleared off the line and Éver Banega had a shot that barely grazed the outside of the post but Colombia held their own and the game seemed to open up in the second half. The introduction of Falcao and Carlos Tevez seemed to open up the game and create more chances. But even through extra time, nobody could find a winner. So the penalty shootout loomed.

The first three penalties for each team went through and then a Colombia shot fired over the bar and gave Argentina the chance to win the game. But Lucas Biglia fired wide and Colombia was given a lifeline. Then the next three penalty shots were missed and set up Tevez to win it. Tevez fired it past Ospina and put Argentina through.

Messi and company are on to the semi finals and will surely be the favorites to go on to the final.
