It was bound to happen as the Seattle Reign saw their eight game unbeaten streak come to an end this past Saturday as they fell 3-0 to the Washington Spirit. The Spirit was playing in front of a sellout crowd at the Maryland Soccer Complex.

The match was very physical and the Spirit scored in the 17th minute, but Joanna Lohman was called offside and the goal was taken off the board. Washington pressured the Reign on the flanks and found Christine Nairn and she was taken down just outside the 18 yard box. Nairn took the ensuing free kick and was unfortunate to hit the crossbar and the Reign defense was able to clear the ball from danger.

Seattle was able to put together some passes with Kim Little and Beverly Yanez and it cause the backline of the Spirit trouble. Somehow, Estelle Johnson, Megan Oyster and Kelsey Wys were able to keep the Reign off the score board.

The first half ended with the score being 0-0, but it wouldn’t be long before the scoring would start.

The first goal of the game was scored seconds into the second half as Crystal Dunn fired a shot on goal, but Haley Kopmeyer was not able to control the rebound and Amanda Da Costa was able to tap the ball into the back of the net and give the home team a 1-0 lead early in the second half.

The Spirit held a majority of the momentum throughout the second half and found their second goal of the night in the 68th minute. Diana Matheson was able to dribble through the midfield to the top of the 18. She laid the ball off to Dunn who cut past her defender and was able to place the ball perfectly into the corner to give them a 2-0 lead over the Reign.

The Reign, looking to get a goal back, relentlessly attacked the Spirit with numerous corners, but Wys and her defense were able to keep them off the board.

The Spirit put the game out of reach in the 82nd minute. Dunn was cutting through defenders like a knife through hot butter when she was brought down in the box resulting in a penalty for Washington. Nairn stepped up to take the kick and coolly buried it to put away the Reign for good.

With the win, the Spirit remain undefeated at home and will welcome the Chicago Red Stars on July 25th with kickoff scheduled for 7pm EST. The Reign will look to get back to their unbeaten ways, but it will not be easy. They play the Portland Thorns on the road this coming Wednesday and then again at home on Sunday.
