Three out of the five Major League Soccer (MLS) clubs have qualified to the quarterfinals in week five of the 2015-2016 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League (SCCL). The teams are: D.C. United, the Los Angeles Galaxy and the Seattle Sounders FC.

Group H:

United took care of business and punched their ticket to the next round in week four. They defeated C.D. Árabe Unido 2-0 at RFK Stadium on September 15th. In the following week the Red and Black traveled to Jamaica to face Montego Bay United FC on Tuesday.

United left Montego Bay Sports Complex with a hard earned point after they clawed back to earn the draw. United was down 3-0 and it seemed the Jamaicans were going to get their first victory of the SCCL, until United scored three goals in the final 31 minutes to level the match 3-3.

Now D.C. United has finished the group stages and is currently in first place of the seeding with 10 points and a positive six goal differential. The seeding is for the eight clubs that qualify for the quarterfinals. How the placement gets determined is first by the amount of points they earn in group play. However, if there is a tie in points then it goes by goal differential. It is vital for the teams to finish in the top four of the standings, since the top four clubs will host the crucial second leg in the quarterfinals series.

For United, they now have to wait and see how the rest of the teams finish so they can determine what place they end up in.

Group D:

The Galaxy qualified to the next round on Wednesday when they drew 1-1 with Central FC at Hasely Crawford Stadium. As for the Galaxy, they are currently in second place of the standings with seven points and a positive nine goal differential. However, the one advantage for them is that they still have one game left to play on Oct. 21st. If they defeat Comunicaciones F.C. at the Estadio Cementos Progreso, then LA might finish in first place due to their better goal differential then the Red and Black.

However, the Galaxy will need a few other results to go their way to finish in first place. First, Club América will need to lose or draw against C.D. Motagua on October 20th in Honduras. Second they will need Costa Rican club C.S. Herediano to make sure that they beat or draw Tigres UANL in Mexico on October 21st. However, getting results in Mexico is a hard task to complete, so as long as they do not let Tigres drop eight or more goals then LA will be fine.

Group F:

The Sounders secured their spot in the quarters by defeating and eliminating Cascadia rivals the Vancouver Whitecaps FC 3-0 on Wednesday at the CenturyLink Field. Seattle entered the game with one option: win or be eliminated. In response, the Sounders made every shot count as they went five for seven. Also it helped that Lamar Neagle put on his cape and scored two goals in the victory. He was a pest for the 'Caps as his work effort forced the Canadians to foul him three times. No other Rave Green player was fouled three times besides him.

However, regardless of Neagle’s Superman performance, the Rave Green are in fourth place and have a good chance of dropping since they only managed to earn seven points and finish with a positive three goal differential. Seattle will need a lot of results to go their way to hold on to fourth place in the standings.

As for the Whitecaps, their SCCL debut ended with a devastating 3-0 loss. All they needed to do was leave Seattle with a point to be one step closer of clinching a spot in the knockout stages. However, their meltdown makes their final match against C.D. Olimpia on October 22nd at the Estadio Nacional a meaningless game.

Group G:

Real Salt Lake is now just a point away from advancing to the next round, after defeating Salvadorian club Santa Tecla F.C. 2-1 on Thursday at Rio Tinto Stadium. Salt Lake only has to get a point in their final match against C.S.D Municipal on October 20th. A draw against the Guatemalan club will give RSL only eight points and that will most likely not be good enough to finish in the top four. Knowing that RSL will play their final game with more of a purpose, it will also help that the game will be at their home.

With that, the first two months of the SCCL are in the books and MLS clubs are performing well. It was obvious that only four of the five were going qualify to the quarters. However, MLS will happily take four clubs in the next round. With only RSL left to secure their spot it is safe to say that the eyes of the league will be watching them in October.
