The Canadians just advance to the semifinals in the 2015 CONCACAF Olympic Qualifications. The Canucks managed to hold on to a 2-2 draw on Wednesday against Cuba at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.

It was not pretty for Canada as the Cubans fired eight more shots than the North Americans. However, this match was filled with errors from both defenses. Les Rouges were able to pounce on the Cuban’s defensive errors.

In the 25th minute Michael Petrasso intercepted a weakly hit pass in the penalty box. The attacking midfielder lets the ball bounce towards the Cuban goalie Sandy Sanchez. The keeper appeared to have close the Canadian chance at a goal, until Petrasso gently tapped the ball past Sanchez to give the Canucks the 1-0 lead.

Petrasso now has three goals in the tournament. The Canadian midfielder is currently tied with two other players for leaders in the Golden Boot Award. Petrasso is joined with: American forwards Jordan Morris and Jerome Kiesewetter.

However, Les Rouges lead was celebrated briefly. Cuban midfielder Arichel Hernandez slotted the ball into the back of the net to tie the game 1-1 at the 32nd minute. The Caribbean Nation moved the ball swiftly around and opened up the Canadian defense. Cuba went on to complete 81 percent of their passes in the match.

The two nations went into the break tied 1-1, but early in the second half Les Rouges recaptured the lead. Canadian substitute forward Molham Babouli took a free kick right outside of the box. He blasted the ball to the bottom right hand corner, his shot swung around the wall of Cuban defenders. The goalie saw the shot too late and dove to the right, but Babouli’s shot pierced the side of the net. Canada was back on top 2-1 at the 52nd minute.

The Canucks had a chance to secure the victory but they blew their chances. They failed to keep the ball and move it around, as the North Americans only completed 67 percent of their passes. In result the Cubans tied the game once more at the 87th minute. Hernandez chipped the ball high and over the Canadian goalie to finish the game 2-2.

The Canucks held on and escaped the Cuban scare to advance to the next round. However, since they finished in second place Canada might face Honduras or Mexico in the semis. Les Rouges will be back in action on Saturday at Rio Tinto Stadium.

The North Americans is now just 90 minutes away from qualifying to the 2016 Olympics in Rio. Not to mention, punching their ticket to Brazil will be their first trip to the Olympics competing in soccer. However, if the Canadians play in the same flat style as they did against Cuba, they will be eliminated in the semifinals.

Cuba is heading home after failing to pick up a victory in the tournament.
