On Monday, U.S. Soccer announced the five nominees for the 2015 U.S. Soccer Male Player of the Year Award. Of the five players nominated, two of them currently play in MLS. The votes will come from national team and youth national team coaches and staff, MLS and NASL coaches, former players, administrators and select media members. Players that earned a cap with the USMNT in 2015 will also get to vote.

Toronto FC midfielder and national team captain Michael Bradley, Seattle Sounders forward Clint Dempsey, Borussia Monchengladbach winger Fabian Johnson, Aston Villa goalkeeper Brad Guzan and Tottenham defender DeAndre Yedlin, who is currently on load with Sunderland, are the five players nominated.

Dempsey previously won the award in 2007, 2011 and 2012. If he was to be vote Male Player of the Year again, he would tie Landon Donovan for the most honors in the history of the award. This will be Bradley’s fourth time he has been nominated. This is the second straight nomination for Johnson while Guzan and Yedlin appear as nominees for the first time.

In 2015, Dempsey appeared in ten games, starting eight. In those ten appearances, he scored nine goals, leading all national team players. Bradley appeared in all 18 matches played by the USMNT in 2015. He has three goals and six assists in those 18 matches.

Johnson appeared in 13 matches, 12 starts. He has one goal and two assists in 2015. He was also sent home after the USMNT lost to Mexico 3-2 in the 2015 CONCACAF Cup at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA. He had asked to come off the field in the final moments of that match. Johnson saw himself back with the team during the last round of call ups.

Guzan has started a majority of the matches in 2015 for the USMNT, 13 in total, while former number one goalkeeper Tim Howard took a sabbatical after the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Guzan has had mixed results as the number one goalkeeper for Jurgen Klinsmann. He has secured three shutouts with 18 goals against on 33 shots faced. He had a record of 8-3-2 in 2015.

Yedlin has bounced around a lot in Klinsmann’s lineup. In some games he plays right back and others he has seen time at the right midfield spot.  Yedlin failed to score in 2015, but has five assists to his name.

Some could say that Bobby Wood deserves to be on this list as well. If anyone on the list deserves a spot it is him. He appeared in nine matches, three starts. He has scored four goals and assisted on another. He was responsible for the game-winning goals against the Netherlands and Germany over the summer.

U.S. Soccer will announce the winner this Friday, December 18th.
