The starting line-ups have been announced! Here we go!
It has been some time since Sporting Kansas City has defeated the Los Angeles Galaxy on the road. In fact, the last time they accomplished this feat was back in 2010, six seasons ago. This does not bode well for the visitors, especially without two of their better players. Will they be able to cause an upset and get back to their winning ways? Sporting desperately need a win in order to get back on track for a playoff spot.
These sides have already met once this season. Last month, these two battled in Kansas City and came away with a 1-1 draw. The home side started out the stronger of the two as Brad Davis found the back of the net first. Giovani dos Santos leveled things up minutes later settling the scoring.
Emmanuel Boateng and Sebastian Lletget are fighting for spots in the starting eleven once the regulars return. These two bring something different to the squad. Boateng uses his speed to blow by defenders. Lletget likes to dribble at defenders and tries to beat them one versus one to open up more space in behind.
As a result of the absences, Giovani dos Santos and Mike Magee will most likely start up top together in Arena’s favored 4-4-2. Emmanuel Boateng and Sebastian Lletget are going to play on the wings and Steven Gerrard and Nigel de Jong will hold down the middle of the pitch.
It will certainly be interesting to see how these two managers cope with missing stars. Luckily, Bruce Arena has practice as he has needed to juggle starting elevens on a weekly basis because of injuries throughout the beginning of the season.
Two of these losses, in Besler and Zusi, are going to be big blows in this match. Besler is a rock in the back and provides an ariel threat off of set pieces in the penalty box. On the other hand, Zusi provides width down the right and always delivers good crosses from open play and off dead ball situations as well.
For Sporting Kansas City, they will also be without three of their own. Matt Besler and Graham Zusi will join the Galaxy’s Zardes and the USA squad for the Copa. Their third man, Soni Mustivar, is going to be playing for Haiti.
The Galaxy are without three of their regulars in Baggio Husidic, Gyasi Zardes and Robbie Keane. Husidic got his first international call-up as Bosnia and Herzegovina will participate in the Kirin Cup in Japan. While Husidic will not play a whole lot with his country it is still a huge honor for him and will use it as a confidence builder. Zardes, one of the Galaxy’s main attacking options, is with the United States Men’s National Team for the Copa America Centenario. Finally, Keane is participating in this summer’s European Championships with Ireland in what could be his last international tournament.
Both sides are going to be without a couple of players each with the Copa America Centenario and Uefa European Championship starting soon.
Kansas City has gone in the opposite direction of their counterparts. In the last several weeks they have dropped more points than have won. Throughout their last 12 matches, SKC lost eight of those. During this same stretch, Sporting’s goals have dried out. They have scored more than two goals just twice. In both occasions, those turned to victories. The other times, those matches turned into either losses or draws. In the eight losses, Sporting scored zero times. That needs to change if they want to make a climb back up into a playoff spot.
This loss, however, does not hinder their spot in the Western Conference. The Galaxy are still in prime position for a playoff spot as they sit in fifth. Even with that loss, the Galaxy still lead the league in goals scored with 27 and have one of the better defenses.
Giovani dos Santos gave LA the lead in the eighth minute and it looked as if the visitors were going to cruise. Montreal responded with two goals of their own before Mike Magee tied things up at two. But then, Didier Drogba won it in the 90th minute and clinched three points for the home side.
The Los Angeles Galaxy, for the first time in matches tasted defeat. They headed up to Canada to face off against Didier Drogba and the Montreal Impact. What the Galaxy came away with was a 3-2 loss.
