Bayern Munich announced earlier today that goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer has extended his contract until June 30, 2023. This has ended the looming speculation surrounding Neuer’s future at The Bavarians. Many had speculated that this would be Neuer’s last season and that a potential move to Chelsea or to the MLS was a possibility.

Manuel Neuer joined Bayern in 2011 from fellow German side Schalke for a reported $19 million. After initially receiving a somewhat hostile reception from the Munich fans as he was signed from their rivals, Neuer quickly became a fan favourite. Since joining in 2011, the German keeper has made over 375 appearances for the club and Neuer was made Bayern Munich captain in 2017, following the retirement of Philipp Lahm.

Bayern’s Chairman, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge spoke to the Munich press earlier today and said “FC Bayern are very happy Manuel has extended his contract until June 30, 2023” and also claimed “Manuel is the best goalkeeper in the world and our captain.”

The Bayern captain told the club; “During the weeks of the shutdown for the coronavirus pandemic, I didn't want to make a decision because nobody knew if, when and how Bundesliga football would continue.”

Manuel Neuer expressed that he “feels very comfortable at home in Bavaria. FC Bayern are one of Europe’s top football clubs.”

Former Bayern Munich and German goalkeeper Oliver Kahn claimed “Neuer is one of the most important pillars of our team.” He also expressed the contract extension is a “strong signal.” Kahn is one of the most successful German players of all time and made over 430 appearances for Bayern Munich.
