The Portland Timbers’ route to the championship game.

The Timbers, who are backed by Giovani Savarese finished the same way Orlando did. Top of the group and with seven points holding a 2-0-1 record.

When they made it out of the group stage, they first met FC Cincinnati who surprisingly took them to penalty kicks, with Portland edging out the Orange & Blue 1(4)-1(2) on penalty kicks. Portland then had a date with New York City FC. After a controversial penalty kick call in favor of the Cityzens, the Green & Gold clawed their way back to win 3-1 with Sebastian Blanco grabbing the game-winning goal.

In the Semi-Finals, the Timbers had to play their best against Cinderella side Philadelphia Union. A tough game, to say the least, the Timbers prevailed to defeat the Union to make it to the MLS is Back Tournament final to represent the Western Conference, and making their third final of a competition in the last five years.

Orlando City’s road to the final

Orlando City SC was granted the top spot in Group A for simply being the host city. The Lions ended up winning the group by finishing with a 2-0-1 record scoring six-goals and allowing three.

The Lions would go on to face the Montreal Impact in the Round of 16. They would defeat the Impact 1-0, getting them to advance to the Quarterfinals.

The Lions pulled off a miracle upset in the quarters defeating reigning Supporter’s Shield winners LAFC 1-0. Everyone thought they were down and out, the Lions came roaring back to defeat the Black & Gold to make their way to the Semi-finals.

Underrated side Minnesota United FC stood in the way of Oscar Pareja and the Lions. But that wasn’t any match for the roaring Lions of Orlando City, as they defeated the Loons 3-1 behind a Nani brace, sealing their spot in the MLS is Back Tournament Final.
