The stadium was opened on September 5, 2014 and has a total capacity of 45,360 spectators all seated, with the maximum UEFA standards and for the 2018 World Cup it had a capacity of 50,000 spectators.

The stadium was built on the site of the Tushino airfield. The current design was developed by AECOM3 and Dexter Moren Associates and also features a separate indoor stadium.
