Sunderland is also very strong after its great start to the 2021-22 campaign in Football League One, where it has collected 16 points from seven games to place second in the table, only behind Wigan on goal difference.

The Black Cats have won four of their last five games in all competitions but in their final game they drew a 2-2 draw against Fleetwood in the league last Saturday, with the home team scoring a 97-minute leveler.

Sunderland secured their place in the third round of the Carabao Cup after a 3-2 win over Blackpool on 24 August, while in the first round they beat Port Vale in early August.

Wigan News

Wigan were League Cup Runners-up in 2006, currently Wigan's priority this season will be winning promotion to the Second Division, but they will no doubt be looking to win over their division rivals tonight.

The Latics, who won the 2012-13 FA Cup, finished 20th in League One last tournament, but have been impressive in the early stages of the 2021-22 campaign, picking up 16 points from their first seven games, which which has left them at the top of the table.

Leam Richardson's team comes into this match after a 4-1 win over Accrington in Football League One on Saturday, following a 2-1 win at home against Doncaster Rovers after the international break.

Looking at this competition, Wigan secured their place in the third round following a penalty shootout victory over Bolton Wanderers on August 14.

Key player of Sunderland

Talented player Leon Dajaku, of Kosovo-Albanian descent, is a great forward, highly versatile, capable of playing multiple roles on the offensive front. Very fast, a feat that makes him particularly effective on the attack front, he is often praised for his spirit of sacrifice and strength of character.

Equipped with an excellent sense of position, he is also an adept setter in the face of goal.

1:36 PMa month ago

Key player of Wigan

Will Keane was the striker who at Old Trafford thought would make it to the first team. He was the center forward of the generation that won the youth cup in 2011, still remembered today. There were also Lingard, Johnstone, or even his twin brother Michael, today Everton center-back, then right-back.

After several injuries and many team changes, he trained for several weeks with Wigan until, finally, last year, he was offered a professional contract in the third division of English football.

Sunderland dreams of returning to another final

The Black Cats are in an extremely similar situation to their rivals as, like Wigan, they also advanced from the second round at the end of August.

Sunderland secured their place in the third round of the Carabao Cup after a 3-2 win over Blackpool on 24 August, while in the first round they beat Port Vale in early August.

The former Premier League team have never won the Carabao Cup but have reached the final twice, the last of which was in the 2013-14 season, when they lost to Manchester City.

Lee Johnson's team already beat Wigan this season, although on their last visit to DW Stadium in April 2021 they suffered a 2-1 loss.

Wigan for the pass to the next round

At the Carabao Cup, The Latics struggled to reach the third round of the competition, after beating Bolton Wanderers on penalties in the second round. This after a tough 0-0 draw in regular time, played at DW Stadium on August 14.

After improving a lot in Football League One, where they are leaders of the competition and advance to the round in the Carabao Cup, coach Leam Richardson will look for his team to triumph over Sunderland tonight, to continue advancing in the tournament.

The Latics have already lost to Sunderland this season, suffering a 2-1 loss at the Stadium of Luz, when the two teams met in Football League One on August 7.
