Royal Antwerp’s form guide
- Belgium’s oldest club had gone 25 years between European participations (1994-95 to 2019-20) and last season played UEFA group stage football for the first time, finishing second in their section below Tottenham and above LASK and Ludogorets before going out to Rangers in the highest-scoring UEFA Europa League knockout phase tie of all time (5-9 on aggregate) in the round of 32.
- European Cup Winners’ Cup runners-up to Parma in 1992-93, Antwerp’s last five continental away fixtures have failed to produce a victory, four defeats preceding the recent 2-2 draw at Fenerbahçe.
- Several Royal Antwerp players have experience of German football:
Birger Verstraete – Köln 2019-20
Viktor Fischer – Mainz 2017-18
Johannes Eggestein – Wolfsburg 2013-20
Michael Frey – Nürnberg 2019-20
Eintracht Frankfurt's form guide
- Eintracht Frankfurt have now qualified for the knockout phase on all their group stage appearances, notably reaching the semi-finals in 2018-19, when they were denied a place in the final by a penalty shoot-out defeat against eventual winners Chelsea. They won all six of their group games that season – the only German club ever to achieve the feat – but despite accumulating just half as many points the following season still went through to the round of 32, where they overcame Salzburg to 6-3 on aggregate before going out to Basel for 0-4 on aggregate.
- The 1980 UEFA Cup winners claimed maximum points from their first six home games in the UEFA Europa League group stage but have won just two of the last five, beyond one draw and two losses. Their home record in the competition, including qualifying, is now 15 wins, four draws and three losses, the defeats having all come in the last seven matches.
- Brazilian defender Tuta spent 2019-20 on loan at Belgian club Kortrjik from Eintracht Frankfurt.
- While there are no former UEFA Europa League winners in this season’s group stage, five clubs are involved to have lifted the trophy in its former guise as the UEFA Cup: PSV Eindhoven in Group B, Napoli in Group C, Eintracht Frankfurt in Group D, and fellow German side Bayer Leverkusen in Group G.
Match background and previous meeting
- Irrespective of their own result Eintracht Frankfurt will also be sure of the place with a game to spare if Olympiacos and Fenerbahçe draw in the group’s other Matchday 5.
- The German club did the double over Olympiacos, winning 3-1 at home and 2-1 – after being a goal down – in Piraeus with Japanese midfielder Daichi Kamada on target in both games, to take control of the section. They now lead by four points, with the Greek champions in second place and Turkish side Fenerbahçe, who won 3-0 at Antwerp last time out, a point behind in third. The Belgian club’s only point came in a 2-2 draw in Istanbul on Matchday 3.
- Royal Antwerp must win to stay in contention to finish second or third. They will still be able to finish second only if they win and the other game is drawn.
- A 91st-minute Gonçalo Paciência penalty earned Frankfurt all three points away to Antwerp in the clubs’ first ever UEFA encounter on Matchday 2.
- That win was only Frankfurt’s second in seven games against Belgian clubs, being two draws and three losses, the first having come two seasons ago when they beat Standard Liège 2-1 at home in the UEFA Europa League group stage. Those were the first goals they had managed in three games against Belgian visitors.
- Royal Antwerp had not faced German opposition for over 30 years until Matchday 2, Köln have knocked them out of successive UEFA Cups in 1988-89 and 1989-90 with an aggregate victory over Stuttgart in between. The Great Old have never won in Germany. In three games, the Belgian team drawn one game and lost two matches
