Panama's worst visits

There have been two defeats in the history against Panama, in what were the first two visits to the Azteca Stadium:
On September 3, 2000, El Tri crushed Los Canaleros 7-1 in a CONCACAF Qualifying match. Víctor Ruiz, José Manuel Abundis, Miguel Zepeda, Rafael Márquez, Ramón Ramírez and Cuauhtémoc Blanco (brace) scored the goals.
The second match was on September 7, 2005 in the final hexagonal, Mexico won 5-0 against the Marea Roja. The scorers were Luis Ernesto Pérez, Rafael Márquez, Jared Borgetti, Francisco Fonseca and Pável Pardo.

With commitment

Yesterday at a press conference, Gerardo Martino stated that both the coaching staff and the players are not thinking about anything other than winning against Panama, this being the only objective in mind:

"The reality is that we as a coaching staff with the players and the whole group are focused, excited and eager to play a good game and win it, that is the only thought that occupies me at the moment. We are absolutely on board the ship of this project", he indicated.

Plan B

Some media outlets, such as Récord and Fox Sports, have stated that if Mexico loses tonight against Panama, Gerardo Martino could be out of the Tricolor; if they tie, an emergency meeting will be held to evaluate his situation and, if they win, the Argentinean will keep his position for Qatar 2022.

Improving offensive play

In response to the criticism of his son, Rogelio Funes Mori's father made strong statements because Mexico's offensive generation is not happening and that makes it impossible for the 9 to have goal scoring options:

"Seeing him as a '9' of the Mexican National Team, I think that not only Rogelio lacks things to be the striker he has to be, but the whole Mexican National Team. Against Costa Rica, 25 minutes went by and he had not been given a ball. If you don't give it to the '9', Rogelio, Jiménez, Borgetti, Cuauhtémoc Blanco, Palencia, or whoever you tell me, will starve to death".

Fight for Marcelo Flores

The fight for Arsenal's 18-year-old promising youngster, Marcelo Flores, is in Canada's eye, as Canada's coach, John Herdman, pointed out that Flores could reconsider his decision to play with El Tri, as the youngster opted for the project presented by Mexico, being part of the U-20 team, coached by Luis Perez.

"I believe that today he is very happy with the national team project, with his teammates, he has been here several times and feels very comfortable. I always believe that where you are happy is where you want to be and he is very happy to be in Mexico," said Perez.

They are not intimidated

The Panamanian National Team has had a remarkable growth, being one of the main protagonists in the Concacaf, this Wednesday the Central American team will be at the Azteca Stadium looking for the three points and send Mexico to the Playoffs.
For a long time, the Azteca Stadium was one of the most difficult venues due to the pressure and altitude of Mexico City, but in the last few visits of the Panamanians they have made El Tri suffer.

Looking for a replacement

Mexico after being in third place and being able to reach the playoffs after not playing well, many fans already want a renewal in the tri-color bench, after the tie against the Ticos and losing the option to overtake the United States, who had lost to Canada, remaining in second place.
Journalist David Medrano pointed out that Jaime Lozano could be option B, Mexico's coach who won the bronze medal in the last Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Watch out for this Mexico player

Raúl Jiménez was absent from the match against Costa Rica due to injury, but he is now available and has the possibility of playing against Panama. Sources inside the Mexican National Team commented that the striker is back in training, with a good chance of playing minutes on Wednesday night at the Azteca Stadium, if everything goes well.
Another player to return would be Andrés Guardado, who received a blow in the match against Jamaica, which is why the national team coach decided to rest him.

Against Herrera

Rogelio Funes Mori's father, Miguel Ruperto Funes, questioned Héctor Herrera's performance against Costa Rica, recognizing that his son Rogelio did not show himself as the striker that the Tri requires, although he is not the only one who is below the needs, with an emphasis on the work done by Héctor Herrera.

"Not only Rogelio lacks things to be the striker he needs to be, but also the entire Mexican National Team... I watched the match against Costa Rica and I can't believe that a terrible '5' who plays for Atletico Madrid out of ten passes he gave six were given badly. I can't believe that they don't supply the '9', so the center forward will never become the scorer that Mexico wants, that we need", he pointed out.

Second worst qualifying campaign

So far, the final phase of the qualifiers for Qatar 2022 has been the second worst at home since France 1988. Tata Martino's El Tri has scored 66.66 percent of the points it has played at the Azteca Stadium, a figure that surpasses that of Brazil 2014, where it scored 33.33 percent of points, in addition to the fact that the offense is the second worst in 24 years.
They have collected 8 out of 12 points at home, compared to Brazil 2014, where they obtained 5 out of 15 points, with 7 qualifiers having been played since the implementation of the hexagonal. Of which only in Germany 2006 and South Africa 2010 were El Tri able to win 100 percent of the points at home.

Tri's absentees

After receiving their second yellow card against Costa Rica, Luis 'Chaka' Rodríguez and Héctor Moreno were suspended from the national team for the game against Panama. This was announced by the Mexican Football Federation (FMF), through a press release, which stated that since they could not be active for the last match of the FIFA Date, the decision was made for both to return to their clubs.

"Héctor Moreno and Luis Rodríguez will leave the Mexico National Team's training camp".
"Both players received a yellow card in yesterday's match against Costa Rica, earning their second yellow card, and will be suspended for one match.

8:04 PM4 months ago

What does Mexico need to advance?

After the draw against Costa Rica at the Azteca Stadium, El Tri could be out of direct elimination for the World Cup, or even out of the tournament.
If Mexico loses against Panama at the Coloso de Santa Ursula, they would move to fourth place, which corresponds to the playoffs, so they will face the United States, Honduras and El Salvador in the last FIFA date, so if they want to secure their place they have to win.
