The French Cup consists of 14 phases (preliminary, first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, round of 32, round of 16, round of 16, round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals and final), all of which are single-elimination matches.

Progressively, and in order according to their division, clubs from regional leagues, National 3, National 2, Championnat National, Ligue 2 and Ligue 1, are integrated into the tournament.

There are around 7,000 teams competing, belonging to the different divisions of French football.
