Mexico Statements

Gerardo Martino spoke ahead of this match: "We are clear about where we are going and what we are looking for; the real competition is the World Cup. These matches are to test and see what we are going to face in the World Cup. We have to work and with a strong mentality, things will come."

"When you face a team of the level like Uruguay, your level must grow; I think Mexico has a team to compete and be able to fight them in a match like in the World Cup."

"It is clear that the result at this moment modifies what we see from the outside, inside we are clear about where we are going and what we are looking for and what is the real competition which is the World Cup and in the middle what is there is the performance because what is outside is whether to quit or not and it is a media game that we should not handle or discuss, what matters is what we are clear about and correct."

"There is a media game that we cannot handle or even discuss. In the worst moment of elimination is what we have clear from inside or what we must correct, but tomorrow we want to have good production and win the game and then the comments out there change."

"I said it a year ago, if I expected that the criticisms that started more or less last year I could modify them and I said no, because it is installed in this way and changing coach is the easiest thing and the analysis is the most difficult and we resort to the easiest thing which is to modify coach, bring another one. We must avoid this, especially because we have a World Cup.

"The defeats... we assume them together, both players and ourselves make an important self-criticism and we do not avoid it, so it is clear that we do it in the intimacy of the concentration so it is not something that worries me".

Mexico's statements

Héctor Herrera spoke prior to this match: "Uruguay knew what they were playing for, they were pressing, they saw how to direct us, they made fouls that cut the rhythm of the match in attacks. In that aspect we are very noble, I'm not referring to kicking, but to tactical kicking and cutting the rhythm".

"It's true that the level increases when you face teams like these and when you compete with higher level teams, your level should increase. Mexico has the selection to compete against them, to fight them in an important game like the World Cup. We need to be more, I don't know if we are intelligent or mature. The other day against Uruguay we started well and they have a lot of experience, they know what they are playing for and by having you under pressure, the confidence and the circumstances make it seem that they are better than us. It was a good match to realize what you will face in the World Cup.

"There are several points we can improve and others we can do the same. The main one we need to improve on is the one they talk about so much, the accuracy. The last games and the last one we had few chances and I think we have players and a great team to have more chances and try to give more opportunities to strikers and that does not worry me at all. We have unbalanced players and they generate them themselves and then as a team. We must work hard on that, aware of what we live and where we want to go".
