Ahead of Monday's big final between Canada and the US the CanWNT met the media to preview the game against their arch-rivals. Bev Priestman and Desiree Scott spoke about the challenge ahead.

  • Scott " I think anytime we play the US it's a battle

Scott has been on the team since 2012 and has lived time and time again the intense matchups and rivalry with their neighbors to the south.

" It's a game both sides get excited for and I think after Tokyo there will be some extra fight in there and it's two quality sides going to war in a final and that's exactly what it's going to be".

The Canadian defender was referencing the last time these two teams met which was at the Tokyo Olympics which resulted in Canada earning a 1-0 win and eventually winning the gold medal.

Scott also spoke about the matchup and mentions the US has made some changes and adjustments and is not the same team they played in Japan.

" I think the US bench is deep and any player they put out there is going to be a quality player but for us, I think we have that similar blend of what we're bringing but you see their roster has changed slightly since last summer and it's going to be a competitive match".

  • Bev Priestman " I think the US looks hungry"

Bev Priestman is well aware that the final will be the hardest game to win especially against an opponent that plays a lot like her squad.

" You look at them and how they have evolved since Tokyo and they have made some changes, the style of the team hasn't changed dramatically and I think it will be the game we expect and to get the best out of both teams".

She continued to talk about the importance and the dream and the realization of the game for the players.

" These are the games that you live for, these are the games you have to bring your absolute best to get a result and in finals, anything can happen on the day but we can expect a beautiful game of football where both teams will do anything to secure that spot".

It is worth noting that while both teams have secured berths in next year's FIFA Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand the winner of the tournament will also book a spot in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Priestman also outlined the keys of the game for Canada to beat the US and come away with another title.

" I think the mindset is the first and foremost and we have prided ourselves on having this game mean more to us than them and I think that's the first team, we're willing to work harder than any other team in defending and attacking and those mindsets are critical".

Kickoff is scheduled for 10:00 pm eastern at the Estadio BBVA in Monterrey, Mexico.
