Arsenal since the last game

Arsenal extended their winning streak to eight games in the Premier League, producing impressive displays against Newcastle, 4-1, and Sheffield United, in a 6-0 thrashing, not to mention a providential 2-1 victory over Brentford, to secure top spot in the world's premier league

March 12, 2024 1:53 PM ET

Porto since the last game

Since the first match was played between the two teams, Sérgio Conceição's side have extended their winning streak in the Primeira Liga, scoring a total of 8 goals and keeping two clean sheets, with a 5-0 win over current rivals Benfica and a comfortable 3-0 win over Portimonense

March 12, 2024 1:48 PM ET

How the Gunners come

Unlike Porto, Arsenal have only one defeat in seven games, also counting the competitions they've played in: Premier League and Champions. They've won six and their only defeat came in the first leg of their last-16 tie against the Dragons

March 12, 2024 1:33 PM ET

How the Dragons come

Porto are on a seven-game unbeaten run in all competitions: Primeira Liga - including one in the derby against Benfica - Taça de Portugal and the UCL itself. There have been five wins and two draws

March 12, 2024 1:28 PM ET

Qualifying situation

With the result, Porto now play for at least a draw to qualify for the quarter-finals of the Champions League. Arsenal, on the other hand, need a two-goal difference or to win the first leg to take the game to extra time or penalties, if the result remains until regulation time

March 12, 2024 1:13 PM ET

First leg

Porto beat Arsenal 1-0 in the first leg of the UCL round of 16 at the Estádio do Dragão on February 21. The only goal of the match was scored by Brazilian Galeno, who gave the Portuguese the win in second-half stoppage time. He took a beautiful shot from outside the area and beat goalkeeper Raya, who could do nothing about it.

Speak, Sérgio Conceição!

"Not much. Honestly. The atmosphere is part of what soccer is about. Environments where there's a lot of passion and desire to support the team, in this case Arsenal, but we have our fans with even more passion and more desire to support us. Pre-match statements don't play, it's the players who go out there, the defined plan and strategy. Sometimes people say things that we probably wouldn't say in the same way later, either way. That's why I don't value it. We know that the task, like the first match, is extremely difficult. When they talk about the differences between big, medium and small teams in our league, in this competition it's much bigger. Arsenal are second in market value, while Lazio are the smallest. When the ball is rolling, it's one team on either side, there are very competent technical teams. We have to look at our team and see what the opposition can do. Collectively they're a well-trained team, they know and understand every moment of the game and beyond, there's a lot of aggression and pressure, they're strong in their tactical schemes, well-trained and with individuality. Anyone in the Arsenal squad is very strong. Without fear, we came here to win the game. It's part of our evolution. Nico, Varela, they're young... And even the others, Evanilson, Pepê, Galeno, are in the process of developing, we know the quality is there. It's moments, crossing the desert, the heartburn of having fewer minutes and working to the maximum, to understand what you have to do. And it's not easy. When you're given the chance, you have to respond positively and not just in one game, but with continuity. And they do. I remember several youngsters who came through our hands and did that. I don't want to get too personal. It's not fair. We're concerned about Arsenal's dynamics with and without the ball. He's part of a young squad, Pepe is the only one who can upset the balance. We're one of the youngest teams at this stage of the Champions League. It's wonderful to represent FC Porto and be on these stages. There's the other side, the pressure, you have to evolve to win. We understand the difference because of everything Arsenal represents. Every game has its own story, and given Arsenal's characteristics, they'll be able to do something different. We have to understand and anticipate the problems. And in the game there are corrections to be made, there's half-time for that, the players have to be ready. Trossard or Martinelli changes something, Jorginho in the middle is different to Rice further back. It changes depending on the players. Understand what they haven't done and what they want to exploit. Being sharp and looking at the opponent's goal. We came here to score goals and win the game".

March 12, 2024 12:38 PM ET

Probable roster for Porto

Diogo Costa; João Mário, Pepe, Otávio, Wendell; Varela, Nico González, Pepê; Francisco Conceição, Evanilson, Galeno.

March 12, 2024 12:33 PM ET

Porto's situation

Sérgio Conceição won't have Marcano and Zaidu available, both with knee injuries, as well as Gonçalo Ribeiro, who has also appeared in the medical department. Mehdi Taremi, who had been improving his fitness and training separately from the group, has been included in the squad for the match. The striker had been feeling an adductor discomfort since February 18.

March 12, 2024 12:28 PM ET

Speak, Arteta!

"There aren't many updates - we still have 24 hours and we're trying to get everyone available.

It's great to be top [of the Premier League], that's for sure - it was an incredible game of soccer with two magnificent teams, with so many alternatives. I think it's an incredible situation to be involved in, looking at the level these two teams have, and we're still there and we're still at the top. So the ambition increases, we want to stay there and we have to go game by game.

We'll have to adjust a few things to generate more chances than we did in the first match. This is the level of the Champions League, facing top shelf teams. We need to be better. I hope the fans bring the noise and we can do that together to reach the quarter-finals. This is the opportunity we have, in front of our people and in our stadium. For 96 minutes bring your energy, bring your noise and let's do it together.

I think the impact they [Porto] can make is incredible. I don't think they really realize it, so we need that noise and we need them playing every ball with us. We need that controlled emotion as well to understand that the game can go through certain phases and we have to be very clever to press at the right times to get what we want. It's a beautiful opportunity to experience these nights - it's been 14 years, so everything we put in will be worth it.

Every week, each opponent has their strengths and weaknesses and the way they approach the game and now we know them a little better. We've played this type of game many times in the Premier League, we played one two days ago. We're just going to concentrate on being ourselves and doing more things that we can control better than we did a few weeks ago.

Absolutely, but obviously the context of the game is very important and we know we have a long game ahead of us and there can be moments when things go your way and moments that can change drastically quickly. Emotionally we have to be very prepared to play these games.

Well, everyone who is available has to be available enough to play, because you might have to play after five minutes or from the start and the boys are in a good position. We're going to prepare as well as we can, make a lot of good decisions and then be brave and have the courage to make things happen. You can't wait in these situations, you have to make things happen and that's the approach."

March 12, 2024 12:23 PM ET

Probable roster for Arsenal

Raya; White, Saliba, Gabriel Magalhães, Kiwior; Odegaard, Rice, Jorginho; Saka, Havertz, Trossard.

March 12, 2024 12:18 PM ET

Arsenal's situation

Mikel Arteta won't be able to count on Timber due to a knee injury. On the other hand, he has doubts about some of his players: Tomiyasu, Thomas Partey and Gabriel Martinelli.

March 12, 2024 12:13 PM ET

Porto finished the group stage in second place in Group H with 12 points, the same as Barcelona, who finished first because they conceded fewer goals. With a 66% record, the Dragons won four and lost two.

March 12, 2024 12:08 PM ET

Arsenal finished top of Group B, having collected 13 points, four more than PSV Eindhoven, who finished second. In six games, the Gunners won four, drew and lost one, generating a 72% record, the fifth best in the group stage, behind Real Madrid (100%), Manchester City (100%), Bayern Munich (88%) and Atlético de Madrid (77%).
