FC Dallas 2-1 New England Revolution (a.e.t)

Prediction: Based on the team's current standings in league play, they both don’t represent who they are in the US Open Cup. The Revs and Dallas have both played tremendous. That’s what got them here in the first place. But FC Dallas have the home advantage, in front of their home fans and on their home soil. Being at home with the crowd behind you will give them an upper hand, and will win this match.

Both teams are coming into this final after dealing with major scares, and dependable players. If both teams play as good as they have throughout the whole tournament, this final could most likely be going to penalty kicks. Both coaches will throw out their best lineup to counter the other.

Dallas would draw the Los Angeles Galaxy in the Semifinals. And it came to be a huge shock. Almost, that is. The Galaxy would take FC Dallas to extra time after 90 minutes of 0-0 soccer. The 101st minute saw the scoreless game break apart, taking the 1-0 lead. Dallas would not give up, netting two goals in the 116th minute, and the 121st minute from Matt Hedges and Victor Ulloa. This would set up FC Dallas for the US Open Cup final, against the New England Revolution.

The Revolution would go back home to Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts to take on the Chicago Fire in the Semifinals. The Revs, yet again, had to rely on Watson to push them over the Fire. A decisive strike in the 42nd minute from Watson helped guide the Revolution to the US Open Cup final for the first time in nine years.

FC Dallas would travel on the road to BBVA Compass Stadium, home of their fierce rivals, the Houston Dynamo. The away team would walk away with a 1-0 win, booking them a place in the semifinals.

The Revs would draw the Philadelphia Union in the quarterfinals, with the match being played at Harvard University. The Union would take a 1-0 lead, only to have it erased by a Je-Vaughn Watson equalizer in the 44th minute. The score would hold throughout the second half, and extra time, forcing the two teams to go into a penalty shootout. The Revolution would take the game by a decisive 1-1 (4-2) score.

Dallas, on the other hand, faced off against the Colorado Rapids. The Rapids took the lead in the 38th minute from a Marlon Hairston ball to Dominique Badji who roofed his effort to the back post. Dallas would respond in the 64th minute when Fabian Castillo made a great run from midfield, nutmegging a defender to pass the ball to Mauro Diaz for an easy tap in. The 1-1 tie would force extra time. Maxi Urruti would be the hero in extra time after a shot deflected into the net in the 96th minute.

In the 69th minute, Sebastian Guenzetti would put the home team up again, giving the Cosmos a 2-1 lead. The goal only served to galvanize the Revs, as newly minted striker Kei Kamara --who was acquired at the end of the summer transfer window from Crew SC -- bagged his first goal for his new club to equalize from close range in the 75th minute. As the second half drew closer to an end, and more extra time being talked about amongst the staff and players, Kamara’s ball into the box saw Bunbury on the end of it to score his second of the night, giving the MLS side a 3-2 lead. The score would hold, and New England would advance.

The Revs would move on to the Round of 16, drawing the infamous New York Cosmos. Once again, a team that would give the Revs a match. Former Columbus Crew SC striker Jairo Arrieta assisted Ruban Bover for the game's opening goal for the Cosmos. Revolution midfielder Teal Bunbury would tie the game up in the 38th minute to put the teams even at one all heading into the half.

For the opponents, FC Dallas, they took on OKC Energy FC of USL. Playing to a 2-2 draw, the game went to penalties, with FC Dallas just barely coming out victorious with a 2-2 (6-5) win.

In the fourth round of play, that is when fans will start to see MLS teams appear, such as New England and Dallas. The Revs first match came against the Carolina Railhawks at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina. The Railhawks gave the Revs a huge match, forcing the score to still be goose eggs to both sides after a full 90 minutes, just after a two-hour weather delay. New England would break the deadlock in extra time to take a 1-0 advantage with a Zachary Herivaux shot in the 103rd minute. The assist from Lee Nguyen.

It’s the final two in the 2016 US Open Cup. The New England Revolution are set to take on FC Dallas in this year’s final. Both teams had to duke it out in their respective brackets and groups to get to this point. Facing tough competitions, and coming close to elimination, FC Dallas, the representative of the Western Conference from Major League Soccer, and New England Revolution, representing the Eastern Conference from MLS, are battling it out Tuesday night to claim the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup.
