French Open champion Garbiñe Muguruza will be looking to add to her Grand Slam title collection at the Australian Open. However, Muguruza is nursing a thigh injury, and she will play Samantha Crawford in the second round in Melbourne.
After an entertaining match that last just under two and a quarter hours, it was Belinda Bencic who booked her spot in the second round. Samantha Crawford looked like she was on her way to defeating Bencic for the second time this year, as she took the first set. However in the second and third sets, Bencic upped her game to eventually edge past Crawford to pick up the win.
The Miami draw pitted Coco Vandeweghe and Samantha Crawford against each other for the very first time. Vandeweghe was too strong for Crawford, and in just under an hour and a half, Vandeweghe won the match, 6-4, 7-5.
