12th seed Richard Gasquet and sixth seed Tomas Berdych had split their 12 previous meetings, with Berdych winning both matches this year in straight sets. It was just their second Grand Slam meeting, with Berdych winning in straight sets at the 2011 Australian Open. Gasquet produced brilliant tennis to take out the Czech and reach his second straight major quarterfinal winning 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-1.

The hard-hitting Berdych dominated the first set, converting on two out of four break chances, and winning 63 percent of his second serve points. Gasquet failed to convert on any of his three break point chances, and won just 25 percent of points on his second serve. Berdych used his tree trunk like legs to produce enormous power on his groundstrokes to remain aggressive and control rallies.

Failing to convert any of his break chances in the first set, Gasquet pounced on his first opportunity to go up 3-2. The Frenchman served much better, winning 70 percent of his second serve points. The Wimbledon semifinalist broke again to take the second set, 6-3, using his magnificent one-handed backhand to move the six-foot-five Berdych around the court.

Gasquet continued to dominate on serve in the third set, winning 71 percent of his second serve points and did not face a single break point. He blasted 10 winners and jumped at his only break point opportunity, and took the set at 6-3. The late night crowd at Louis Armstrong Stadium rallied behind the Frenchman, marveled by his aesthetically pleasing play.

The fourth set was much the same, as Gasquet was able to dictate play with his consistent serving. He won an impressive 70 percent of his second serve points and was able to convert on both his break opportunities. He dominated the final set to defeat Berdych, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-1 and reach his second US Open quarterfinal.

Gasquet moves on to meet five-time US Open champion Roger Federer in the final, the Frenchman winning just two of their past 16 meetings. The last time Gasquet was able to defeat the former world number one was back in 2011, on the red clay in Rome. The 12th seed must play the beautifully aggressive tennis he did tonight in order to have any chance at a second US Open semifinal.
